Looking To Start A Crew

by Gabriel DAmato · in Jobs · 10/31/2013 (5:18 pm) · 8 replies

Simply put, I am looking for a Torque3D based project development team to make a prototype as a part time thing. We all have real jobs. We all would rather make games professionally. I am looking for a small crew to build everything from the ground up to create a functional prototype of a very profitable idea

I am a Marketing Consultant full time, and have followed the industry very closely. I earned my Game Design stripes in college a fistful of years back, and ONLY NOW came up with a number of valuable ideas. I strongly believe that there is a VERY SIZABLE GAP IN THE CURRENT GAME MARKET that no other studio is going to be filling in the near future. The game would be red hot with activity EXTREMELY quickly after prototype release. Very easy to monetize, and relatively simple to build with the Torque3D Engine.

To clarify exactly who I am looking for:
*Members will NOT be paid on the front end. Profit is shared on the back end.
*The idea is about 90% fleshed out already... Just looking for people to help build.
*Founding members will earn equal shares of the game/studio formed.
*Members will work remotely until investment is brought aboard.
*Members will only be expected to put in 12-18 hours a week TOPS.
*I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR CARTOONY/ANIMAE PORTFOLIOS. The game design is REALISTIC and MODERN DAY. (so help me god if someone else sends me a set of freaking spaceships I will have a heart attack!)
*Game will include REALISTIC MODERN DAY Characters, Weapons, Vehicles and Environments.

If you are interest, please feel free to email me what your specialty is (Code, 3D Model & Texture, Animation, Sound, Level Design, etc) and any sort of portfolio you have.

USA BASED ONLY.

Gabriel,

Uhm, Ok this is a bit snarky and I do not intend to start anything negative, unfortunately your post caught me on a potential bad day I will try and be fair.

1. I am sure this might not have been intended but, you are kind of coming off like a bad used car salesman. I get it, you have the 'next big profitable, awesome, amazing, incredible, blah blah blah, thing....' Those of us that have been around the games industry for a bit have seen this type of post a number of times.

Thing is, based on my experience and from what I read in your post, you have ideas and nearly no skills to make it happen. So, you need a team. Cool, but dude, lay off the hard sell crap if you want interest to be generated. Be honest and open about the concepts you are trying to work toward. Obviously, do not give away key play features because GAME play is the key to a successful game but, anyone that has a 'GREAT IDEA' can at least lay down the basic concept without giving away key concepts and data.

One more 'annoying thing for me', DO NOT segregate people based on a couple of 'portfolio' shots (Example: 'I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR CARTOONY/ANIMAE PORTFOLIOS') I will straight up tell you, that 99.9% of the time, someone that can do that style is more than capable of realistic stuff. Artists are just that, we deal in art. Many styles and many assorted types. Look at the thought behind the image, not JUST the image you see. Are the details well represented? Are the color choices proper? I can do the animae stuff, I can do real. I can do a freaking oil painting if you want.... My skills are NOT unique. I know a number of guys (and maybe girls) on GG that can do the same.

Anyway, I guess my base point is take a bit of a humility pill. If you come at me like you did in your post I will tell you to bite me. If you come with a non-used car salesman (AKA... I just need help to make my game approach), I will listen and maybe offer to help. I know I am not the greatest artist here and I probably fall under your 'don't even apply' group but, I do know I have a WHOLE LOT of REAL WORLD info that you need.... Just something to think about. It's a fine line between 'positive' and obnoxious.

I really do hope you SUCCEED in your quest for a team. In fact I hope you build the greatest game EVER using Torque. I am just trying to help you be a project manager versus a marketer.

Take it or leave it. I wish you luck.

Ron

@Ron

I think I may have just caught you on a bad day. Not sure why someone would take so much offense to a post which is basically a job application set of requirements. Either way, I will try take your advice in the spirit in which I believe you intended it. I am very sure you have seen posts about "the next big profitable, awesome, blah blah blah" thing in the past so I am sure this is also not the first time you pissed on someones boots.

It's not a hard sell, I am just not interested in forming a team with people who aren't going to take it seriously. I find it a good practice to make things clear from the get go. If you aren't into it, that's cool... just move along.

Insofar as asking people not to send me Animae/Cartoon models, it's strictly due to past experience. I have hired and managed lot's of creative people in my day, and as a rule of thumb you need to make yourself crystal clear up front about what you do and do not want to see. I don't want to see these models, I want to see the exact type of models we will be using and the skill of the artist who made them. I agree 101% that artistic techniques can be extracted and transferred, but I would rather not have to sift through stacks of portfolios that aren't what I am looking for. If you don't understand that, it's because you have never had to do it before in your life... it sucks. SUCKS BAD.

Basically, I did not make the post to sell you a 1998 Dodge Ram, I made the post to find the very few people who would understand what I was going for and respond if interested.

Lastly, I am not sure what I am supposed to "take or leave". You wrote your response on a public forum. It's tantamount to spray-painting your feelings on the side of my house. Since I have read your post and have contemplated your thoughts fairly and reasonably, I will make a suggestion to you: Show some decorum and a little professionalism. Your response was suitable for a personal email, unless your goal was to actually (to repeat a phrase) piss on my boots in public to make yourself feel better.

Either way, I actually do appreciate your thoughts, unfortunately you just didn't quite understand why I posted that way. I worded it like a job posting ad because I meant to.

@Steve
I actually did get a laugh off that image. Well placed.

Job posts means you offer salary.

Your post is an offer to become business partner with you. You ask for people to be a co founder of this project.

What you should be careful about is this:

never team up with the idea guy

You see many people think that they have the next awesome idea. But ideas are cheap and everyone have them. What is really in demand in the game industry(actually the whole software business) is pure implementation skills.

You might not have these skills and ask for them here on this website. You offer a partnership in return for these skills. But the truth is that the people with the implementation skills will need to do most of the work in the beginning and later on your marketing skills will be in demand.

Now whether this is a good deal or not I will let people decide for themselves.

Wish you all the best.
