Looking for content: Torque3D Magazine

by Lukas Joergensen · in General Discussion · 07/29/2013 (7:40 am) · 27 replies

Hey guys, currently I have about 15-17 pages of content for the Torque3D Magazine I'm working on.

Do you have anything you'd like to have included? Something secret you'd like to share? Something awesome you'd like to show off?

Please post it here or send me an email on ljorgensen@winterleafentertainment.com and I might have it included in the magazine! (Images are VERY welcome)

Thanks for reading!

Quote:The 1st Edition of the magazine, will be completely free with no ads in it or anything, a sheer voluntary project I use to measure the demand for such a magazine, and the size of the market.
Later editions may include some sort of commercialization, as I will need someone else to work on it, so being able to pay them would make sure the magazine kept running for some time.

I've been toying with the idea of doing a storyboard type walkthrough of my terrain creation pipeline. Is this the kind of thing that would suit the mag? What sort of page number limitation have you got in mind, mate?

I've been toying with the idea of asking you to make a such lol. Because I knew you wanted to do something like that!
I don't see any reason to limit the number of pages, if it becomes too large we could potentially split it over 2 editions.

Guess I must have an alpha channel.

What about a beta channel too?

Hey, I could try to remember what I was thinking when I made my AI Tutorial project and write it up. Might take a minute, though - probably two weeks or so, kinda busy ATM. The tutorial scripts are at https://github.com/RichardRanft/AITutorial if anyone feels like taking a look....

How often are you planning to release an issue?

A good idea could be to include a small prototype of a game say every issue or 3 months. That could draw more interest and also get lots of examples out there.

To start with it could include updated examples already in the resources section etc.

@Richard - Oh, I'm all theta these days man!

This seems to be coming along nicely. Having developer interviews would be awesome. Featuring works in progress, artist tips and code snippets would rock. The more drawn out the influx is, the more issues can be done. This is going to be a lot of work for you though, Lukas. Hope you have someone lined up to help you!

Hmmm, a prototype every 3 months...that sounds damn familiar... Edward is definitely on the to a good track with that idea. ...no pressure...no pressure...no pressure...

Quote:Featuring works in progress
Artist: ...here is the cube I am using to start drawing my model...
Interviewer: Isn't that the default cube when you first start a new scene in Blender?
Artist: Well...you might think it is similar, but...well...it is about the same dimensions...and...I might have used the same vertices...and...well...there is a lot of love put into that cube.
Interviewer: I see...so do you have some other models?
Artist: Well...
Interviewer: Yes...
Artist: ...I am having artists block... I usually do terrains and I am lacking inspiration and...
Interviewer: How do you normally get inspiration?
Artist: Usually? Um...I am a pilot you see, and I fly advanced vehicles. You know, top secret stuff. However, I might have accidentally blown my cover when someone online recognized me. You see this tattoo...
Interviewer: Ahh...I really have got to go. I have another interview with a guy named Ron. He was my backup for this issue. Have a good day.
Artist: Okay, thanks, should I call you to get a status on this article?
Interviewer: Umm, I would rather you not call me.

Oh, and here are some wavelength descriptions to help you binaural yourself into peace and happiness:

@Demolishun, yeah I remember the old magazines used to have code examples/small games.

Yeah making a new idea of a prototype could be a pain, but I reckon a small game even made from existing code resources etc and standard artwork could at least get people to see what content is actually out there.

I can only think of however:
Steve Acasters turn-based combat (Excellent tutorials)

...

Apart from that I reckon maybe a FPS game with a new gametype/weapons each issue.

@Demolishunator - lmao

You'd be surprised how versatile that cube is, mate. I use it for lots of things. Like, um, stone blocks, and, ah... non stone blocks. Seriously though, it's great for learning how to do those UV thingies. In fact, were it not for that starting cube (I don't have it load by default anymore) I never would have been able to learn the basics of Blender. I don't do tutorials, you see. I click things until I work out what they do.

Haha, there are so many cool people at GG.

I got to thinking, what if we tweaked T3D to allow us to more easily create machinimas, but do them as like live acting almost. Maybe setup a bunch of expressions for body language with buttons. On top of that I could figure out how to capture the voices from voice script to text (there are libraries out there that are good) to move digital mouths/textures on each robot. We could act out some of the really funny stuff that occurs in life and at GG. Because it could be comic strip episodic (ie short) it could almost be a downloadable comic to play in a version of T3D. In reality I think it will mostly stay as youtube videos until the tech is realized better. Anyway, it being episodic it could be used to illustrate in a fun way new tech, art, music, code, etc for T3D.

It could also morph into a tool that allows for cut scenes to be designed. It is almost the way Blender got started. They created a program to make TV commercials. I could see something like this going many different ways and people adding to the tool because of showcasing and the fun factor. Most machinimas are made from existing games, but what about some simple game engine modules that take it to the next level?

I am not saying we should run out and start coding this, but with the inclusion of the GMK and other awesome mods like recast it could be epic. I have already figured out how to capture audio data and tweak textures for mouth movement. That is a piece of cake. It just requires a tweak for it to capture waveforms played as a result of a robot voice output. That stuff is generally threaded and I have that covered.

Huh, come to think about it, this could be setup into scripts that read like movie scripts with action cues, voice cues, and timestamps. That would be better than trying to juggle tons of buttons. Also, if you did have a way to record scripts like macros you can interactively program the action. Then go back and tweak the script to play like you want. It could be like movie making 3D movies.

@Edward,
Steve's turn based game is so damn good. That has to be in an issue! Yeah I kinda remember that. I still have some copies of really old computer magazines. My favorite ad said: "5MB hard drive, more space than you will ever need."

What? There have been a Magazine before? And here I thought I was being original! should have went with the newsletter....
Edit: Ah thought you were talking about a T3D Magazine particularly.
Anw I love the feedback here is mine to you:
I love the include game idea but I dont have the time to make stuff like that myself, I would be happy to share someone elses work but tbh, after first issue I will have little time to work on the Magazine. (Will figure something out to keep it running)
Issue release cycle is not settled yet, depends on a lot of factors. There is juice enough in T3D community to release one every 1-2 months just not sure if I have the resources for keeping it up at that rate.
@Richard I will have a look at that code.

To get back to the prototypes, perhaps I could try to do some of the game guides on GG.com and release that, shouldn't be too much work when someone else made it for you lol.

@ Demolishun
Brainwave Frequency Listing <--- holy science Batman!

Just a thought but you might give twitter.com/IanHardingham a shout, as Mode7 are a successful companying and using T3D for the new game www.frozenendzone.com.

In fact there are a few successful/well-known Torque games out there, just can't remember their titles right now ...

The guys who made SPAZ!

And try to reach Dave Calabrese.

And, though it's more adult (ok, very adult) you could talk to the guys who made Bone Town....

Thanks.. Thats one thing I didn't need to know exists...

Will see if the developers of SPAZ (awesome game) and Mode7 got some time to spare ;)

What is Dave Calabrese' connection to T3D?

Btw thanks for all the input guys!

@Lukas,
Is there a specific theme to this first issue? That might help trigger some neurons for people here.

Very good idea to publicize Torque3D engine.

@Daniel... You have my full curiosity.

I am very interested in this actually :)

Might I suggest perhaps a small part about using T3D for Virtual Reality?
I can see this being very popular on reddit with the Oculus Rift crowd and it could bring more people and interest to T3D.

If i can help out with anything regarding the VR stuff let me know I did do a quick idiots guide on setting up T3D and using the VR template maybe that can be used possibly as well?

Maybe a small write up on the Oculus and what it can do with T3D?
