Game Icons & UI

by Dwarf King · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 06/17/2013 (8:40 am) · 11 replies

Dear fellow game developers,

so the time has come to pick something for my game's icon and UI. I have searched far and wide in the world wide web and found plenty of weird and nice stuff(good prices and fair license indeed) but one question still stands... Am I taking the right decision or do someone sit with the knowledge of a good Icon and UI maker for RPG games?

Do anyone here on this forum knows about a great website where I could buy some good art packs for my game? Or do free art under the MIT license exists?

So far I have seen the creative license... eeew no god too many holes there when fair use is talked about... I tried devianart but that side does not show any prices and many are very experience artist who have done lots of work for very famous AAA games(hence the prices may be out of my reach at this time).

So again:

Any great website where I could buy some good art packs for my game for a fair price?

Best,

Dwarf King

Edit: I have found the CC BY 3.0 to pretty safe.

What are you searching for exactly?

User Interface art, Icon art for abilities, weapons etc. All the stuff that makes the interface looks good during play time.

Oh fantasy related :o)

Make some your own, they are not that hard, it is just little 2D pictures, especially if it's fantasy.

@Dwarf King : Might I suggest checking out the Roencia Game Creatorsart packs sold directly on the GarageGames' web site? The one I linked is a mixed pack but offers a few medieval UI elements.

Well, honestly there is GIMP and of course PS2 (Which is free at this link):www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/

In the end, it's not that hard to make icons. Just a thought.

Hi all,

thanks for your replies.

@Simon Love
while the pack is good looking it is sadly still not the style I am looking for.

You are all right about using Gimp and PS are a great thing and not that hard, but I am on a time budget so the time I need to make stuff will have to be short, as in "short for real".

I have made several maps in Gimp with success so far.

In the end I decided to buy some artwork and PS texture pattern packs(sadly not in Gimp) from a website called www.yurdigital.com, as it had a very low price, a fine license AND just what I wanted :o)

I especially like this part:

"License Grant:
This EULA grants the Buyer a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the included content. The Buyer can copyright and use the included content commercially or non-commercially as long as the included content is altered and combined with other images and the original content can't be extracted from these works. The Content Developer retains all copyrights to the included content in its original format."

Now I will then make transparent pattern pictures(in PSE 9) as needed and import them in Gimp and mix background art and patterns all up, and due some cartoonish/flash/layer/filter effects.... voila my creation :o)

I guess what I want has to be unique and with a dark twist over it.

@Ron Kapaun

That link seems to say:
"The serial numbers below should only be used by customers who legitimately purchased CS2 or Acrobat 7 and need to maintain their current use of these products. "

Now that is odd(server down they say?) as it is up and free.... I better stick with my legal Photoshop Elements 9 as that will not give me any legal issues :o)

Once again thanks to all for your input.

I thought I would share this with the forum if someone should be in need of some great Icons.

game-icons.net - Hundreds of free icons to customize and include in your games

It has been a real life saver and it is under the CC BY 3.0

It is awesome and with some simple work in Gimp or Photoshop the results are awesome.

If you want to make great icons check out InkScape. It allows you to produce primitives that are vector based and scale really well. This will allow you to make multiple resolutions of the same icon for little effort. I have used inkscape to do animated textures and overlays. I have also found great links on using inkscape to make icons.

Here is an image plus overlay I made for a compass on a robot (shows real life data from an inertial sensor, but could be game data). I animate the overlay over the compass using wxPython for our robot platform:

demolishun.net/images/robot/compass_needle.png
Here are some more images for my buttons in my program:
demolishun.net/images/robot/forward.pngdemolishun.net/images/robot/reverse.pngdemolishun.net/images/robot/left.pngdemolishun.net/images/robot/right.pngdemolishun.net/images/robot/stopLabel.png
Edit:
It should be noted that all graphics are stored as SVG. This allows you to change any color at any time in any part of the image. So if you need a bunch of icons for a sword you can literally make one sword and make minor tweaks to the color and or shape. If it makes sense to just have different colored icons then it is trivial to make a bunch of items of different colors using the exact same shape. It can save a lot of time down the road of not having to do a whole lot of image editing just to modify a color.

Aw, sweet! I can doodle and sketch with a pencil and paper all day but I'm horrible with digital asset creation - just ask Mitch or Kyle....
