by David Wyand · in Torque 3D Beginner · 06/12/2013 (3:23 pm) · 10 replies

Discussed this week:
  • Some Pull Requests have been merged and closed. We will continue to chip away on these.
  • Modular Template work continues. Level loading is now complete.
  • Current submissions to the Steering Committee.
  • Near-term blogs to get community involved: Sign up for Community Additions as no one has come forward yet; How to create a GitHub Pull Request to help those that are having trouble; General Modular Template direction.

Sweet. That reminds me, I should get started on that issue I was going to fix. Can't wait to see how these modular templates are going!

I am thinking maybe a broader scope of community additions so that people can pick something that maybe more relevant to there own game work.

When I saw the list I didn't see what I could do in the time I have.

Looking forward to seeing the blogs come out. And will keep an eye on the tasks out there.

Thanks for the updates!

@Edward: the community in general is more than welcome to work on any addition of their choice whether we put it on an "official" list or not. The Community Addition requests that we have so far pointed out are simply those that we wanted to apply towards the 4.0 roadmap, yet are not likely going to have the time to be able to work on ourselves. As pointed out before, it is time for the Torque community itself to stand up and show that it has an active interest in helping to maintain the momentum in the growth and evolution of T3D.

@Daniel: thanks for that fix, it looks good!

@Edward:
As Mike pointed out those were just suggestions that the Steering Committee came up with. We've been asking the community since we went with the MIT license to help out with whatever they can. Unfortunately, we've not been seeing the community activity that we hoped for.

So this time around we decided to try something different and suggest actual tasks in case people are wondering what to do. But again, this isn't meant to limit anyone to what they want to contribute. The only person that knows what they have time, skill and interest in doing is you. What should we add to the list that would help you step forward and help out?

@Community:
The Steering Committee is really at a loss as to how we can help you become more active and contribute. In this blog on Community Additions I was going to write, should the list also include everything from the Feature Requests page? Should the list include all open Issues on GitHub? Are you all just waiting for me and Mike to brainstorm that perfect task that you can finally jump on? Or are you just waiting for a page where you can put your name against a task before working on it?

Thanks!

Set up Jira and start assigning tasks to people!

...Unfortunately, we've not been seeing the community activity that we hoped for.

i will say it again even if i just hate
really hate to repeat myself regarding this

but the the major part of the community
that was here before T3D
went OpenSrc
has just a different approach at T3D related things
i mean what ic almost evry week pop up
is a blog about another paypackage
instead of contributing something to the cause
the major part
goes wildcard and works solo just to make some bucks
hell that just wont make you rich
especially since lets be honest other engines got things already built in and with splitting T3D this way
you are actually cutting off future users of T3D

where we have to either buy a so called upgrade or package
to enhance T3D
that is not the way to go
am not sayin this cuz am lazy to get me one of those packages
i actually got me drive/ map/ taik and some stuff from gg`s store
with that being said

how about from time to time todo some giveback action?
and support the steering commitee????
that question is ment for yaa all
(even if this looks harsh, its not - its a serious question
as i just don`t see the point into creatin enhancements for T3D
and at the same time splitting it up.
This Engine could grow to something really powerful - but for that it takes more then just the steering commitee)

regarding my person
i sent the commitee a e-mail
even if my time is cut short
am willing to help/ todo what i can
and that is 3D art wise

I think we need some thinktanks on how to change some business models of Torque3D related things to better ones.

A page to show who is working on what. Too many times I have started
on something, gotten half way with it and someone else beats me to the draw. No joy in wasting what little time I do have. A central page versus info spread across blogs as to what you want the community to
be invloved more in. This goes hand in hand with the central page for
work assignment. Whilst people can work on any addition, it makes no
sense to do something that 10 other people are doing at the same time.

Hi all,

I could be wrong, but at this time, the T3D Steering Committee, it is reduced without the minimum workforce required to present the intended work.

Therefore, in my opinion, the remaining members of the T3D Steering Committee should forget for a while, all those suggestions for V4.0, proposed to the community, until because without the number of people required to implement them, the committee alone at the moment, cannot work miracles.

Because of that, the T3D Steering Committee should now focus all their actions purely on major critical issues related to maintenance and performance of the T3D, doing only the possible that might be done at this time, without pressure, with the existing workforce and freeze the rest (minor issues, new features, etc.) at all, until the group is complete once again.

Unfortunately, the deadline for release of the version 4.0 no longer possible for a while, due to lack of human resources and that is a fact.

Meanwhile, they could keep on to search in the community for skilled volunteers who have time available and willing to be part of the T3D Steering Committee perhaps offering some sort of incentive (not necessarily money in cash) to persuade people to participate a bit more.

However, somebody might ask: what if the T3D Steering Committee cannot recruit enough volunteers in the community?

The answer to the question, since it involves directly a company's core product, should come from the company's management, which will examine the case and take the necessary measures to solve the impasse.

Anyhow, after Steering Committee is complete once more, then they might re-think the suggestions made to version 4.0 left behind for a while, to present a new release date for version 4.0 and handle other issues that arise during this transition period and keep moving forward once again.

Please note that all I wrote above are just suggestions.

Greetings,
