Diffuse Texture Problem.

by Stephen · in Artist Corner · 05/30/2013 (12:34 am) · 19 replies

I have purchased a 3d model from a third party and setting it up for Torque 3D. I noticed something weird about the diffuse texture when I opened it up in gimp. It has this white filter or something? What is causing this?

Looks like only one colour channel is marked as visible. Have a look at your channels and make sure to check that all three (red, green and blue) are marked as visible.

That's my guess, at any rate.

Also looks like a strong alpha channel (transparency)

I don't see any transparency and the colors are checked. But if I open the image in Torque 3D is shows up correctly.

So I downloaded another program "IrfanView" and it displays the image but I noticed the image is very dark. This also happens in Torque 3D.

I'm not 100% on targa, but I believe you may need to import it as a .raw file, depending on the compression used. That image looks like a spec map, though. Weird.

I purchased a third party 3D model and the only image files I have are in tga format. Other 3D models I purchased lucky had the psd file.

IrfanView has a built-in batch converter that I use to convert all of the .tga files in my models' folders into .png, so maybe try that and see what it spits out.

You may not see the transparency, but it is there and it is the reason for your problem.
The squarish background you have in gimp signalizes that this is transparency and in infranview this is changed with black, so with black it does look better, but it is still a strong alpha channel.
So you can remove the alpha channel in gimp to get rid of that, you may need to adjust the strength of the alpha channel to 100% before removing it.

So I checked under layers and found that there was a transparency. So if I remove it the image turns from dark to bright.

Depends with what color the program changes the alpha channel if it is removed.
Because of this you need to raise the coverage of the alpha layer in gimp to 100%, select only the alpha channel and fill it with 100%, then you can remove it.

So I went to Threshold Alpha and it was set at 127. So I set the Threshold Hold to 0 and this is what I get.

Sweet. I'd add a new layer filled with 100% black (or something) below this layer, and merge this layer onto it.

Edit: Though maybe the alpha threshold is set too low. Hard to tell looking at that screenie, but maybe try it at something like 20 or so.

I have no idea what you are doing there...
The alpha channel defines with how much pressure the things are painted, so you need to raise it to 100% and remove it, then you should have full colors.

@Dan Webb
No not fill the picture, just fill the alpha channel, this one has only black or white anyway, so if you fill only the alpha channel with 100% black, the problem should be solved.

Hopefully the silence means Stephen's got it sorted anyway.

Well not really. I contacted support where I bought the model and told him about it and they are contacting the author. In the meantime I still haven't got it working correctly. A friend of mine uses paint shop pro and when he opened it. The image was fine and didn't have the problem I had. So really I still have the problem just found a work around.

I could convert the file for you, if you'd like. My email is in my profile.

Hi, that's my model. Could you delete the alpha channel? I put the specular map in there accidentally, that must have been why it was suspended on Turbosquid.
I'm assuming that's the problem, otherwise please contact me and I'll help any way I can.
