How should we promote T3D?

by Lukas Joergensen · in Torque 3D Professional · 04/28/2013 (2:03 pm) · 170 replies

Ron started a discussion here after yet another awesome T3D-initiative went down the drain.

Tbh it's a shame we can't even raise 10.500$ for an Android and Linux port of T2D, thats a really cheap price for something that would benefit us all.

So the discussion is, how do we make more people aware of the T3D engine? It's a great engine, it's open-source and completely free, we just need to get the word out there and tell people how much T3D has evolved!
One of the ways we can do this is share!

Anyways will try to keep the topic-header clean, so... Discuss!

I thought Legions was moving to Unity! A T3D port instead would be way cool though.

There was a plan to move Legions to another engine, but that idea was scrapped.

Oh okay, interesting. Sounds like bringing it into T3D would be a really cool project then.

As for those of you who are wondering who is running Torque3D.org (and Torque2D.org) that is me. My intentions are to prevent the domains from being taken hostage and to eventually become community websites for the engines akin to what Blender.org and Ogre3D.org are to their communities. :)

The domains are at the disposal of the Torque 3D and Torque 2D Committees. The sites currently are just a lite overview of each respective engine's repository activity and some resources links that just link back to various GarageGames pages and forums. Ideas and suggestions related to the domains should probably be moved to a different discussion thread if anybody would like to start one. I'm also on the MaxGaming IRC server in #GarageGames using the nick/alias TRON.

Awesome work Nathan! Dan Webb and I were discussing a T3D community hub site the other day. Maybe a separate thread would be a good idea.

@Nathan Nice forethought on that one.

@Michael If the port for legions is allowed I don't see any harm in that approach and would be a great thing to do. It would be nice to see it on T3D.

Any further thoughts on approaching that idea?

@Michael Perry,
Can I call you MP for short? Since you close threads the acronym used for Military Police seems somewhat appropriate.

Anyway, who, what, where is this conversion to T3D taking place for Legions? I missed a few years here, what is Legions exactly?

@Demolishun - It's not happening anywhere, yet. It's just a suggestion I've been trying to push for a few years now. Fallen Empire: Legions is a game that was developed internally at GarageGames a while ago. It's a spiritual successor to Tribes. Quite fun and popular.

When InstantAction was shut down, the parent company (IAC) formed an agreement with a few of the players and one close contact with GG. It's a fan/community run game now. You can find it at their revamped website. It's been updated a few times, a labor of love.

Switching to Torque 3D would not only be better for the developers of Legions, but also a great update the players would enjoy.

You will not need a TGEA license to work on the port.

@Michael Perry
Oh really how come? Isn't it based on TGEA and thus closed source? Or did they get the source released under a different license?

Legions was not built on the commercially licensed version of TGEA. It was built on an internal branch named "Juggernaut". There was never a license in place for the code that Legions runs on.

Porting Legions to T3D sounds likea great project and a great game to show what T3D can do. :-)

Where can you get the art and all the assets?

@Lukas - Interested now?

@Edward - Exactly. Great for both communities.

@Joshua - Anyone who signs on will get some solid experience. Not just in Torque. This kind of project is something that happens in the professional setting. Looks good on a resume =). It will certainly be challenging, but the payoff is worth it.

@Kory - Everything is located in a private SVN repository. Engine, art, scripts, launcher, server, etc.

I wish this was the sort of thing I could commit to right now!

This sounds like an interesting opportunity. I'm in the search for a 3D engine to work with and I'm torn between Unity and Torque3D. I've purchased many of GarageGames' products but the sad thing is I never finished a single game with it. Lack of documentation I guess. :-/

@Michael - Are you looking for studio or a premade team that has extensive knowledge in T3D? I wouldn't mind joining a team on a task such as this to gain experience and a better understanding of T3D.
