Blocking the auto-insertion of cursor in text field

I have a text field in a modeless dialog box GUI.
When the GUI is pushed to the screen, an insertion cursor automatically appears in one of the fields.
I would like to push the GUI to the screen but not lose focus, as the user may be typing into another field when the GUI first appears, and the insertion point should not move until the user takes the mouse and clicks to open another field.
Is there a way to block the opening of any field when a GUI pops?
