Torque 2D confusion

by Bubba Gump · in General Discussion · 02/02/2013 (1:13 pm) · 3 replies

I don't really follow torque, but I thought I'd give it a go, only to discover it's going to an MIT license and being placed on github.

Which is fine, but I don't see it on github, any indications on when it will get there? What do I download in the meantime to start getting acclimated with it?

I'm also confused by the various products iTorque2D, etc etc. What are these, and how do they tie in with the new OSS offerings? I've looked around, and I'm honestly not seeing them.

Bubba,

I am not an expert on the Torque 2D side of the house but I would recommend reading this post: www.garagegames.com/community/blogs/view/22065

Torque 2D has not been open sourced just yet, it takes time to get the code cleaned up and ensure everything that is in the source is 'free to distribute' under MIT. I am sure some of the T2D users will drop in and add further clarification.

iTorque and Torque 2D are being melded into one super program known as Torque2D MIT.
After that, GarageGames will focus just on Torque 2D MIT & Torque 3D MIT in regards to game engines.
I think they said T2D MIT will be released in a couple weeks or sooner.

To start practicing you could try downloading the demo version of the current T2D. Just be aware that GarageGames is changing so many things in T2D MIT (for the better) that if you get anywhere in the current T2D, chances are you will have to relearn/think differently a little bit when you switch to T2D MIT.

Ron, I had come across that blog post previously, I just wasn't sure when/where the new repo would be (other than somewhere on github).

A few weeks sounds good to me, I'll just have to wait :) Thanks for the heads up.
