New Project: Implementing Oculus Rift into Torque3D

by Jordan Parsons · in Torque 3D Professional · 01/24/2013 (12:47 am) · 8 replies

In a few months, I'll be delving into an major implementation project involving trying to implement the Oculus Rift SDK inside of the latest release of Torque3D. What is Oculus Rift you ask?

Watch this video:

This is the most realistic, immersive VR technology to [almost] hit the market to date, in terms of the computer entertainment industry targeted specifically at games. This will be a huge undertaking, but I think if I pull it off, it'll be a great feature to have included in all future releases of Torque3D. I'll be looking towards the new Torque3D Steering communities support and contributors for more streamlined support for 3rd party input devices, and probably won't start until that portion of the engine gets released. Once a new stable binary is released on GitHub, that's when this undertaking will take place. Figured I'd announce it to the community in case that people wanted to contribute to this effort or post comments and ideas. We have plenty of smart people in this community and I think this would set Torque3D apart from other engines if we can be the first indie engine with Oculus Rift support.

That is amazing and it is about time. I had never seen a VR system this well made before. I would not think that it would be difficult to implement. I would imagine that you could take a low resolution and have the video card double it. The scenegraph once created can be linked just like the controller.

I have visions of people using this with a Wii controller and destroying their house. "Ooh, it has tactile feedback!" <smash> <smash> <smash>

This really would be nice for T3D. I'm actually working on a game right now that I was just thinking a few days ago would be totally AMAZING with the Oculus Rift. Like, totally something that would take huge advantage of the technology.

I backed the kick starter for the Rift too.. I asked Dave Wyand in this thread if the steering committee were looking at adding support to the road map.. he said yes .. as well as Hydra support :) ...

I didn't make the kickstarter, but did get it for pre-order. I honestly can't wait. Check out Jimmy Fallon using it, pretty funny! http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/31/3936288/josh-late-night-jimmy-fallon-oculus-rift-razer-edge-blackberry-z10-video
I like forward to getting this implemented as I will be needing it soon!

This is going to be a real game changer, especially combined with the new input system. Leap + Oculus for teh win!

I got my leap in January, just waiting on my Oculus kit in April. Can't wait!

If anybody needs help testing using both the leap and oculus let me know and I can take a look.

Very excited about getting my hands on an Oculus Kit.
I don't think I have ever been as excited about a piece of tech to date.
So happy to know Torque implementation is in the roadmap!
