T2d on Android!

by Hugo Munoz · in iTorque 2D · 01/08/2013 (9:22 am) · 8 replies

I know this has been pointed out a lot of times, but I really think that TGB should be ported to Android, with all respect if you guys @ GG continue to ignore this fact TGB will be doomed in the upcoming years, Android has become a major player on the casual / non casual game ecosystem.

I truly believe that TGB is one of the best 2d engines I've seen so far, but not having the option to publish on android is a big blocker on most of the real world projects, every time a client knocks my door for a new project they ask and Android version, most of them are more concerned on having the game primarily on Android, then iOS then PC/MAC, and thats the reason that 90% of the time I have to use unity instead (which I don't like as much as TGB) or code my own engine based on COCOS2d or something like that.

From a dedicated developer point of view every time you guys took time to explain all the bug fixes and improvements, I personally noticed that most of these bugs I've already fixed by myself when I had to, I'm not saying that fixing the issues is a waste of time, thats is the minimum thing that "we" as your customers deserve, but I humbly suggest to start working on more important things, I volunteer to help in this effort committing as much time as I can to help making this Android port a reality.

with all respect.

Hugo.

@Hugo when T2D goes open source you will have plenty of opportunity to help with bug fixes and an eventual android port :P

Also remember that if 3SS gets funded, the development on 3SS will benefit T2D aswell, and if the demand for an android version is high enough, then they might port it in the future. Which includes porting T2D afaik.

@Hugo - I look forward to you helping us with the Android port then. No doubt a few people will start on it as soon as the updated MIT version of the engine is released.

Also, I've stated several times that before we should ever consider working on another platform we needed to do the following:

1. Fix the worst parts of the engine
2. Cleanup the general platform code
3. Fix the existing platforms

Getting those out of the way allows us to spread to other platforms more easily.

I saw 3SS on kickstarter, really liked the concept behind it, but is sad for me to say; I don't think they are going to reach their pledge, they basically have to collect $498.000 in 25 days from now, that sounds difficult and not very realistic, I really hope I'm wrong (honestly I really do).

Besides that, 3SS is a product targeted (in my humble perspective) to teens, students and hobbyists, in a real project with a big budget you CAN'T just go and change the art and some rules of a given template. Thats why we need an awesome fully functional open source engine like TGB with a clean and fancy platform abstraction layer that could run on every major piece of existing and future hardware.

I truly believe that GG guys are aware of this very serious limitation, but I don't understand why they didn't addressed that from day one like other companies did.

@ Michael, I would love to help on it when the time comes, sorry if any of my posts offended you or anybody @ GG in some way, my intention was just to point out one of the primary needs of TGB. As always you do a great job keeping this community alive.

@Hugo you misunderstand me.. 3SS and T2D share alot of the codebase so any port work made on 3SS would be a big step forward for porting T2D aswell as GG employees have said countless times, improvements to 3SS is improvements to T2D and vice versa.
I don't believe in the kickstarter either but one can always hope :)

@Lukas, yeah I miss-understood you at first place, now I know 3SS is built on top of TGB. What I'm going to say maybe sound stupid on my part so I feel sorry in advance ;), but really?? GG is committing some of their man power to create a gameSalad like product?? (* notice that gameSalad supports HTML5 and Android *) instead of making what they know have to do... honestly I simply don't get it. its like 3 years or maybe more since we saw iTGB you guys have had enough time to fix the engine internals to expand on other platforms. I said this with all respect, it's not my intention to blame GG or anybody
