Getting started with replacing the character

by Arko · in Torque 3D Beginner · 12/08/2012 (2:49 am) · 12 replies

I'd like to replace the main character with a normal looking human.

Just wondering if there are any tutorials on this? Before creating one myself, is there a place I can find pre-made characters to import into the game with animations etc?

I noticed the Garage Games store has male character kit.. Are there tutorials on how to import these or modify how they look? Would it be as simple as editing some texture files to change how they look? I can't find any free animated models to import into Torque 3d to test out.

Alien Art Pack

Zombie Art Pack

I believe they both come with documentation that helps with importing. Also, our FPS Tutorial helps with importing.

thanks for the link, what I'm looking for is simple a "Casual" human as the main character. I noticed the MACK pack has this. If I buy the MACK pack, can I just open the datablock for the main character and change the model file to the "casual" human in the MACK pack?

And if I want to change the color of his pants, for example, could I do so simply by editing the .dds texture files? Thanks

@Arko - I haven't used the MACK, but I know it was developed long before Torque 3D. I'm not sure if the creators updated it to work perfectly in T3D. Hopefully someone else can chime in and confirm.

You might find the characters from Daz useful
www.daz3d.com

You can't just drop them in but it might be a good start point for you.

Hrm, not sure if I can buy the MACK pack without knowing if it will work with T3d.. I'll look around to see if anyone has tried it and had it work.

About Daz3d, I have tried that once and I like it, however I don't know how to use it to put a workable character into T3D.

I'm looking for a quick "drop it straight into your game" solution, so I don't mind paying if there are models for sale that will go straight in. I just want a normal human male with normal clothes instead of the futuristic character that comes with T3D.

There are several third-party content providers who offer Torque ready models. Dexsoft is one who offers Modern, sci-fi, fantasy, and cartoon categories. There are other providers as well.

Once you have the model you want, which should be a .dts or .dae file for use in Torque, the simplest way to use it in-game is to modify the default Player datablock's shapefile properties filepath to point to the new shape. At some point you'll find yourself wanting multiple character shapes or NPCs, you will then need to create a new datablock for each -- there are several tutorials and/or resources here that describe the process.

Mack will work with T3D with a few modifications, if you're looking for just the model its really easy, just follow the FPS tutorial and you're pretty much set aside renaming animations to match T3D scripts

Thanks for the links.. I like that Dexsoft site however it may be too high quality for what I'm looking for.. I'm looking for just a basic character, hopefully a little cheaper. Are there any other sites that sell "ready to go" torque models? I'd definately be interested in a good shop that sells them.

About the MACK pack, that's encouraging, I think I might be able to handle renaming the animations if that is all it takes to get the character in there lol.

I'm just looking for a normal looking character that's not the default lol.

CubixStudio had some normal human (male and female) player shapes that were Torque ready, but I'm not sure they are still around. Arteria 3D may have some as well... and I'm sure that there are others, however I don't actually use third party content so don't know who else makes Torque ready assets.

I've owned quite a few of the content packs and I can say that the MACK pack is my favorite as far as characters go. Tons of animations plus clothing and full source art thats easy to change. Now I would say that you'll definitely get more use out of it with the most basic of understandings in scripting because then you'll be able to add customization ect. Arteria 3D models are a little less straightforward but the guy who runs the site is really nice and will help you with pretty much any problems. If you get any of these kits email me at KLahage@gmail.com if you need help.

if u can do some convertion then u can find tons of free animated models on net.

or
u can go with fps model packs.
www.thegamecreators.com
do a look on their character packs.
cheap and 10-20 model on each pack.
but u have to convert them on dts.
use milkshape for that.

MACK is not ready for t3d 1.2
and looks like it's developer have no intension to update it in next 2-3 months.

Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated with MACK/FACK in any way and am not an authoritative source.

The last thing I saw on the topic was that there was an issue getting the packs to fit with the updated material system, something about network synchronization of materials if I recall correctly. I haven't seen a recent status update on this, though.
