'ignition' Registration Bug - 'hardware Id' Is Changing

by Marc Eichstaedt · in ThinkTanks · 10/04/2003 (8:49 pm) · 6 replies

The 'Ignition' system used for hardware ID specific registration does not work. The so-called 'hardware ID' the system uses to keep track on which machine the game was installed/registered on is based on frequently changed parameters like e.g. the volume creation date of a hard drive.

This means that a reformat of the hard drive or an upgrade to a bigger hard drive will render the 'hardware ID' the game is registered to as 'false' and not allow the game to be registered with its license key, anymore.

I have discussed this at length with GarageGames support via email and was told that this will be fixed in a future update of the ignition system.

Here's hoping that the 'future update' will be available soon, because as it is I am fed up with owning games I cannot play due to the %^&$ registration system they use!

Marc,

Wanted to post to make sure you know we are aware of this and hopefully this will be fixed in a future update.

It is unfortunate that the copy protection is preventing you from enjoying the game, but we have to do what we have to do. Given our distribution model, we have to be careful and keep the honest people honest and have some sort of protection mechanism in there.

How does this particularly work, Joe?

Over the weekend, I was staying a couple days at a friend's house, and I installed Thinktanks on his Mac to show it and get in a few games. (I wanted to finally play it on something better than my G4/400, 16MB vid card :) ) It ran just fine. Before I left, I removed the game.

At any rate, there wasn't any notice about not being able to register, so I assume we can install it on 2 or maybe three different ones before the protection really kicks in? It was nice to be able to load it on my friend's Mac while he played Star Wars galaxies on his PC -- one can watch someone else play a MMORPG only so long. :)

The install policy is what one would call family fair use. If you have a few of your own machines, feel free to install it on them.

We can't give anything away about how the registration system actually works, but you are on safe ground right now. If anyone who is 'legal' starts having registartion problems due to mutiple installs, they should send us an email and we will work with GarageGames to make sure people can play and everything stays on the up and up.

Hi I downloaded Orbz on 11/6/05...it's by Garage Games. I am having the same problem , no registration given after I paid for the game. But I am noticing that all of the posts here are from 2003.... it's almost 2006 now, so why hasn't this registration number problem been taken care of yet? Anyone have a clue??
I'd also like to get REAL customer support, rather than links to other sites that can't help me.
If anyone has a 1-800 customer service number, please send it to me. Thanks

I want to register my game, but I can't find the off-line registration key. Where is it?
