Licensing Status of Included Assets

by Dashiva · in Torque 3D Beginner · 09/22/2012 (11:41 am) · 11 replies

Hi,
I was wondering what the status of the assets included with the game engine is, are they released under the MIT as well? How about the FPS tutorial? I'm specifically interested in the player animations. Thanks again for releasing Torque as open source.

Afaik, if you can't find a licensing file in the repo I would guess it's the MIT license. Not sure about it tho!

the FPS demo items are purchasable as asset pack from the GG website, it would be fair to assume you cannot use them unless you purchase them

Hmmm... I just noticed these "new" items on the store, myself. Thing is, back in the day these were usable as part of the Chinatown assets. Weren't they?

Seems cheeky to me, to put it mildly.

You do not lose your license (usage rights) for anything previously purchased by using the MIT version of Torque 3D -- you just cannot freely distribute anything not covered/included by the MIT version! Your original license restriction still covers anything you own that is not included in the MIT version. So don't be distracted that some of the (tweaked) content is now for sale individually.

Semantically the MIT license only covers the software and documentation, so apparently GarageGames needs to clarify the usage rights of the artwork. I think it is safe to assume that it is inclusive however.

Personally, the stock assets and documentation are the first things I always removed from my install... so it's a non-issue for me :D

Ah, gotcha. Cheers Michael. I'll still be my grumpy self though, if it's all the same to you (I'm a grumpy old man, after all). I do find it odd that the new content packs are now the "top sellers". Beating Ron Kapaun's awesome Conifer Forest Pack. I still can't see Adam deGrandis' new packs either.

Whenever i see a top sellers list, i automatically read highest kickbacks, is the natural born cynic in me

AFAIK the assets being sold in the store has been greatly improved so it should be more useful for other thing than the china town level. I believe i read a blog with a GG saying they put a month in improving the assets for resell

The problem that I see is that some assets are included in the Github repo under MIT, so I'd think that the generic fps animations, which are there, are MIT too.

The assets in the original demo were huge puzzle pieces, as they put it. The new ones sold on the store have been split up so that each building is separate. There are also three LOD levels in the new assets. I dunno if they had more than one originally.

You can usually assume that anything in the MIT release is freely usable, even if you previously have some commercial license. Because the MIT gives you even more rights. GG have already confirmed that the assets in the previous commercial releases are usable in your own games, so it should definitely not be more restricted with the MIT edition.

Just to recap, anything in MIT is useable Open Source. Anything that you have previously bought/licensed is useable under that commercial license.
