[for those who monetize with ads] Banners or Interstitials?

by Zachary Tuttle · in General Discussion · 09/06/2012 (12:31 pm) · 4 replies

I know that some companies have recently rolled out some new interstitial ad units that look very native to the phone. They are getting a great response.

Banner ads seem to be a thing of the past. I've heard manny people complaining about largely ineffective they've been. But some still find that they work just fine.

Do any of you who advertise on your apps find banners useless as well?
Or do think they work just fine and will continue to generate income for your app?

Or do you think both should be run?

It depends on how fine-tuned your ad service is. For esxample, I have never touched an ad on Android or iOS devices that took me out of the core experience ("Find a date on Zoosk!", etc). I have, however, touched ads that are from the same company for games that seem similar to the one I'm playing and like. So, for me, I've never given ad revenue to anyone knowingly unless it was cross-promotional revenue.

Thanks for the reply
That actually makes a lot of sense.
So essentially, anything that actually enhances the user's experience is more likely to be clicked on no matter what format the ad is in.... that sound about right?

Or is a subject a person is already at the site for.

Personally I abhor ads. So I use no script to block most of the banner ads as it blocks them at the source. Whatever you do don't just shove crap in their face.

One thing I was thinking of was using auto keyword highlighting on a site possibly with hover popups after a delay. These key words would be linked to products that are related to the subject or theme of the host website. That way it is not in your face and it provides context related adverts. It would require the site to be designed that way though. So for where you don't have control of the site just make sure the context is the same as the product.

Right Frank. Our server, and those who operate it (so to speak) target the ads to make sure that they are on relevant sites. From the advertiser's point of view, they only want to spend money on ads that they know will for sure be clicked (or at least have the highest chance for a click) So we offer publishers the option to pick and choose which type of ad to allow on their site/app and which to exclude.

So its in everyone's best interest--publisher/developer, advertiser, affiliate group, and most importantly the user--if the ads are "optimized" (pointed in the most relevant direction, hosted only on relevant websites/games, etc.) instead of just "blasted" everywhere with no rhyme or reason.

Does sound close to what you were saying or did i miss it?

The next question, then, is which ad formats are more effective/beneficial to all of those parties involved?
Banners? Popups? Interstitials? Text? Push notifications?
