Particle Effects Won't Work

I just bought Torque 2D, and I was going through a tutorial, but the particle effects don't show up. I dragged the "New Effect" button under "Particle Effects" onto the screen, but the effect doesn't show up. I can see the box around the image, so at least that's there. I tried doing this on multiple projects, it still didn't work. Should I just re-download Torque 2D?
