Contacting other Member's by Email, is this a stupid question?

by Michael Flynn · in Site Feedback · 03/15/2012 (9:35 am) · 20 replies

I know, I'v seen post from 2002 about be able to contact other members using a PM type system here on
Garage Games site, but I can't find it so I guess it just got dropped?

I would love to be able to PM messages to other members, especially to ask questions about products or for support or bug reports. Also Just to be able to say here I got that script I promised you here it is,
without giving out my REAL email address to someone or the world!

I think it would make the site more closer, and give people the chance to work together on projects??
It would also let non-members converse with Members about specific questions and problems only related to them, say they want to ask about some code edits they made to a sample script in a Forum posting but don't want to post it to everyone else, so they want the original poster to check it out first...

What does everyone else think about PM 'ing on Garage games?

Thanks,
Mike

i think it would be awesome personally. a way to PM, possibly an IRC link to remind people that its an option would be nice.

Yea, I don't like IRC, my personal experiences with IRC is most times the people in them are A$*'es and never want to help.

I think it should be kept in Garage Games site. not "out sourced"
But that's my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the reply and input @Paul!

well, they already have an IRC channel setup for GG that some GG people sit in. its just not as widely known as i think it could/should be. I don't think its "outsourced" per se.

Oh, Please don't take that wrong I don't mean "Out sourced" I just meant it should be controlled by Garage Games. I also didn't know we had an IRC channel?? What's it called and I don't think I'v seen it listed anywhere or I just didn't look/ pay attention to it.

Thanks again!

now a days private messaging between forum members is a very common option.
i am connected with only a few forums.
and among them only this forum do not have PM option.also some very importent features to make it user friendly.
specially that "markuplite" things.
are these complicated to implement?or any security reasons?
even my friend's testing forum have those options.
although he has used somekind of template.

I am afraid that if anyone could pm any one some guys that do a lot free work around here would get bugged so much they wouldn't get there task done. or people like twisted would get bugged so much he would stop updateing just get away from endless pm's of the same question.

If PMing was added, it would have to have the requirement to be disabled. I can't even imagine how many messages I would get in a single day. That's why I lurk in IRC.

This already happens with just an email address :)

I hung out in IRC a while back and found the self-aggrandizing attitudes displayed there to be tiresome... although some few did seem to try and be helpful to others.

Besides, If I remember correctly can't you PM people on IRC too?
What would be the differences?

You could add an auto reply to just click Ignore someone until you want to talk to them sometime.

It could also be a feature ONLY members have to PM each other.. you don't "join" or purchase to support the community then your stuck in free forums land.

If the Garagegames forums were to have a PM option I would much prefer that it be restricted to actual members only, and definitely have a on/off option. Having some random moron being able to spam PMs at whim would be irritating ;)

Well, the only reason I thought about it was the only way I know how to get a hold of someone on here is the post in the forum... Example:

----- Forum Post ----
Hey Michael Hall got a great idea if you want to get together and work on it, OH BTW I would post my Email but everyone who reads this would Spam me to death!
------ EOF -----

@Michael Hall, not picking on you dude your just the random example! LOL
So that's why I think PM is good.
Maybe a Member volt??
Put it in a blog for a week long vote and see?

I don't know Like I said Maybe a stupid Idea anyways...

@Michael Flynn: no worries :) You can also check a member's profile page and see if they list an email address, some do.

in account settings, there i always have seen an option to enable or disable receiving pm from member user.

Actually I would prefer a system that has a white list for PM. If a user is not on MY white list then they cannot PM me. That would make it so it could be used among teams without risk of getting spammed by newbies. Just being able to turn it off is not enough as that punishes the user who is getting spammed so they cannot use the feature.

It would also keep the spammers who pop up occasionally to be limited to only spamming forums or blogs. They won't be able to send PMs as they won't be on any user's white list.

At any rate I vote to have PM turned on for Micheal Perry so we can bug him more! ;)

No PMs without having a product connected to your account? I'd really like a PM facility as well. I can respect people not necessarily wanting to be available to everyone, especially posting their email address, but I feel like it'd be a great addition, and facilitate a bit more interaction between individuals in the community.

Also: should be in Site Feedback?

The reason I said no Pm without owning a Torque Licensed, is so
non-members don't just jump into the forum and start PM everyone about questions or Spammers, Like the one that Spammed all the Forums last month? that was Advertising the stupid fake WWE match crap.

Side rant- (If I could I would have erased it right then and there.)

Not to punish anyone, but I think if you make the jump into Torque by purchasing it then you should get the added "reward" of talking to other "MORE" interested users who have spent the cash to show they are serious.

Just my thoughts about it...

I think you're thinking of the enable/disable for having your email visible to the public. We have no PM functionality currently.

Rest assured folks, PM is high up on the feature request priority list.

Great to hear Garage Games is making an Effort!
For now guys I guess we will have to stick to the
old Soup cans and string to talk.

Ummm, anyone got a empty soup can?

I don't believe we've ever had a PM feature. We did have a Java applet for IRC in the site back in the day that people used, but I can't remember a PM system. I just may not have used it, though.

But it is definitely on the list for our webteam.
