Angry Bird Type of Zooming

Hello everyone. This may be a dumb question but I am working on a game that is a spin off of the Olympics and I want to be able to see a wide shot of the entire screen and then have it zoom in on the character who will be on the left side of the screen when the action begins. For instance for the shot put I want to start how Angry Birds does where u see the whole field and then be able to zoom in closer on the character when I'm ready to begin throwing the shot put. Should I design only a scene that is wide and then have it zoom in on the character or design two screens, one wide angle and then one closer. I'm concerned that once the screen is zoomed in the graphics will lose a lot of quality.
What is the best way to approach the graphics and what action or code would work best to achieve this effect.
