Torque Tutorial Videos WebSite?

by Michael Flynn · in General Discussion · 03/05/2012 (4:36 pm) · 9 replies

Hi all,

I'v been Searching the net for all the info I can find on Videos and Written
information associated with Torque 3D. So I'v purchased a web hosting and
a 2 year contract, for another project that didn't work out, so I'v got this
un-used web server sitting there waiting to be used.

What I propose, is that I would like to put it to use and turn it into a
Torque Video Tutorial and Written Tutorial web server for Torque users!

This is where I need help! I will pay to keep the site going, but I need
help in getting information submitted from all of you guys! I would
also like to get Garage Games involved with it as well but linking to it and
maybe if possible making it the un-official or official Tutorial host
for Torque, not just 3D but any other Torque related information.

The web host has unlimited band width, blogs, emails, etc, so I can build
any kind of web site I wish.

I would really like to get feed back on this idea, and from anyone who would like
help create or submit Videos and Written Tutorials. I'm not looking for
"look at what I did videos" but there will be a user Gallery, I want how to's, like
how to create, and export animated models in Maya, Max, Blender to Torque.
How to add an model to your world and script say a walk or run animation.
How to correct Collada files when importing to Torque 3D

What ever anyone can use. Garage Games web site is great, but it's kind of
scrambled up, no place holders for all the information, kind of like my bed room, Lol.
Not that I am knocking Garage Games site, but I think a more organised
DEDICATED to Tutorials site may help out and Garage Games wouldn't have to
spend their time working on it, and can get back to creating great advancements to Torque!

What do you all think? Please leave commits!

Thanks, Mike

What a great idea.
If you haven't yet, check out a website called www.3dbuzz.com
they do video tutorials for Unity, Unreal, and the leading modeling packages.

the problem you might run into, is that with me its a matter of time and money. ( I have so many projects I want to complete, I don't have the time to make videos)

Others might question you on which torque product to make videos for. Even though T3D is GG's main product, I still think that TGE (1.4, 1.5, and TGEA) still are viable and has life left in them. Other developers might disagree with me and you on this point.

Secondly, if you pay one person to teach you that 2 + 2 = 4 or if you get the lesson for free, how many times do you need to repeat the lesson before you understand the concept!

3dBuzz has video lessons on packages like Maya, 3dsmax, Houdini, etc.
Even though I've just perused the site, they do a fine job. How can they be beat?

You might take up a hint from them!

I'm not out to make a site that teaches how to use Maya, Max, Blender, just tips pertaining to Torque, not just T3d but any Torque/ Garage Game Project, If you need to know how to model their are lots of Web Site that have that stuff. I want stuff like how to import animations to Torque, or how to fix textures that don't work in Torque.

How to add weapons, or mount things ETC... That information in video format. Some times it's easy to watch n learn than to read.

I'v haven't found any Web Sites that Teach Torque related things, other than Garage Games Site, but you can find hundreds on Photoshop, Gimp, Maya, Max, Blender....

I hope more people comment and post their ideas!

It seems like I confused you a bit!

First off, I agree with you that there is room on the internet for a site that explains how to work with Torque related products!

The part about Maya, Max and others is that experienced and intermediate programmers may feel that you do too much as there are (like you mention) hundreds of sites already out there for those type of products!

I understand what your saying, I was trying to say that here is an example of the type of videos I'd like to see:

Blender:
What do I do with the Model I just made and added bones too?
Do I do the animation in Blender and export it?
I tried that and for each animation I had to export a new Collada
model, then the Textures where all screwed up and the animations didn't play right. Plus I had 10 Collada models of the same Player.
So someone who knows how to do the process of making a model and exporting
it to Torque with animations or what ever would be helpful.

I'm sure it's the same with Maya, Max, and others so the same video
Tutorial for each would be of great use I would think???

Just an example, which at the time is my real problem!

I am upset that no one else seems to have read or cares about this
kind of project except you Gary, maybe It's just stupid?
I'll give it a week or so to see if I'll drop it.

It's not a stupid idea Mike,

If people are posting on the site about problems they are having, then there is a need for someone to answer their questions!

it's a matter of reaching the interested people at the right time.

I would love a site like this and once I get further into torque (About to buy torque 3d soon) then I would love to make some vids for the site.

I have about 4 years to 5 years of c++ programming on and off in .dlls so I should be able to pick up pretty easy.

I Have Permission from Garage Games and they think it's a great Idea.
So I have started building the site.

Keep looking out for the Announcement, probably be in the Blog area
for the opening of the site.

If anyone has a Tutorial, Written or Video and wants to Submit
it to me to approval and adding to the site, just send an Email to
learningtorque@gmail.com
Include contact info and a description of what you want to share.

Vimeo, YouTube, videos are OK, but if you have a video you want
only shared from my Web Site then I'll try to make an upload
page for that on the site, but let me know if you have one so I will know in advance.

Thanks!
