"Free Autodesk software is for personal use for education purposes and is subject to the terms and conditions of the end-user license and services agreement that accompanies download of the software. The software is for personal use for education purposes and is not intended for classroom or lab use."

If you plan on releasing a commercial game, then it's a no go. If you just want to muck around with game design to learn, that's the purpose.

3ds max should install no problem without needign to downlaod or install anything besides an operating system. ( i should know just installed max2011 on a fresh windows install a week or 2 ago )

If your having problems check that your using the right version (32 bit or 64 bit) for the machine your trying to run it on.

3ds max is an expensive but powerful piece of software so if your trying to learn 3d modelign for video games that you want to publish and make money off of id recomend learning blender which is free to use.

I agree Blender is a great alternative to 3ds Max, it's free and there is no license restriction on your models as compared to student license of 3ds max.

T3D is going Open Source and will be posted to GitHub when GarageGames is ready.. it will be using the MIT license so you might want to grab it when it's made available.

As for 3ds Max needing anything installed prior to using it..would you be more specific about that question?
