Graphics Programming Black Book by Michael Abrash. An absolutely brilliant book. It is a fragment of time from when innovate thinking and ingenious mentalities reigned ( origin of computers <- 2001 ). Where states of wonder, shock and awe were actually achievable by both users and deveolpers. A far cry from the standardised methods of today managed in a soul-destroying fashion to feed people with the next varied flavour of familiar crap.

NOTE: I understand why standards and standardised technologies are necessary but you have to admit the requirements of marketers, users and industry in general (dilbert much?) are enough to seriously dampen your hope for the potential of innovation.

Anyway enjoy the read, its beautiful.

Good luck.

You are so right, the future of wonderment belongs to us in the indie dev world, and our unorthodox ideals. I founded SvengaliGames to combat this terrible forging force in the gaming world. More power to all who think throughout the box! Oh and it is a great book, a definite quality read.
