What do you think about the Sony's Vita?

It is always interesting when a new platform is released. In Sony's case, the Vita is coming under a lot of criticism even before it is released on Feb. 22.
On the face of it, the machine is impressive, very impressive.
- OLED screen
- dual cameras
- dual touch input
- dual analogs
- powerful graphics and cpu chips
etc...
The $249 price is coming under attack with the 3DS selling for $179 or less and $99 smartphone plans.
The question of need has come up. Do we need another platform? Aren't smartphones, DS and PSP enough?
The analogy I'd like to make is a comparison to cars. Do we need another sports car like the NSX? As a consumer, my answer will be of course. Any consumer will have varying opionions on products and companies provide variety to try to sell there products. Even in a crowded market consumers benefit. Another example would be be games like ICO or Beyond Good & Evil, great games that did not sell that well.
If I put on my business hat, it becomes much less clear. I think the trend towards tablets and smartphones is so powerful, the handheld market will likely shrink...alot. The Vita will be hard pressed to be a successful platform for Sony.
Thoughts?

Needs quickly give way to wants when fun is out on the table. $50+ per game these days is not exactly fun IMHO.

I think that they had better open that bad boy wide and let the indies have a dedicated chunk of market space if they want to compete with google and apple. It seems that Sony and Nintendo both actively ignore the huge interest in $0.99 smaller games that anyone with a dream and a computer can make today. It's a proven market, and generates interest in the hardware.Needs quickly give way to wants when fun is out on the table. $50+ per game these days is not exactly fun IMHO.

Games should be priced at $40 at most.

I am positive that the PS Vita will possibly do okay, but then the price is $250 not unlike the launch PSP. More people will wait for cheaper versions which is most likely happening possibly in the summer or fall of this year.Games should be priced at $40 at most.

A more correct analogy would be, why make a sports car when theres 50 million normal cars.
Why release a 'dedicated' gaming device that has more power and tech than anything else? Its a good job not everyone is anti innovation :)
