Linux Compatable Version?

by Robert Fritzen · in Torque 3D Professional · 11/20/2011 (4:46 pm) · 4 replies

Hey GG, I had a question for you,

I know there are plenty of people out there who use Linux computers, And I wanted to know if the insight of a Linux, or WINE version of T3D would be a possible work in at some point, as I have a few people who would be interested in T3D if it were Linux Compatible.

My Friend who is using WINE 1.3 is getting this error:

[18:45] Nyoka: And ...for the Torque 3D demo, file: Torque3D_Tools_Demo_1_2.exe I get this error
[18:45] Nyoka: "irsetup" Failed to open output file.

We stopped supporting Linux a long time ago, long before the company traded hands the first time. Linux support is entirely community driven now.

Several of us have been updating the Dedicated Server Linux port resource that Bank started and I'm planning on releasing yet another updated patch file for 1.2 T3D release sometime by the end of the month.

As for as a working T3D client/graphics on Linux that will be a while as OpenGL is simply not working correctly in T3D at all. I can get the OpenGL GFX module working to the point where the GUI is fine, but as soon as the game session is started hardly anything works graphics wise simply because there is a lot of code missing in order for the GLSL shaders to work. And I'm very new to shaders for both OpenGL and DirectX so for me it'll take me a while to figure out what to do in order to make GLSL shaders work again. This is the also the same reason as to why there isn't a Mac port for T3D anymore.

Scott, is there any item on your side that you have to support the dedicated server part?

I understand that the client is a major item, but the server, I think did most of the job collaboratively with you.
I think server in linux is an important item as clearly linux box are cheaper.

Or another approach could be to implement the changes from Bank but not supported them. A majority of them are preprocessors and there are just slight changes in term of code.

Thanks for the feedback.
