Unity Nominated Best Game Engine Finalist where is TORQUE 3D

Unity has been named a finalist for Best Game Engine in Game Developer magazine's 14th annual Front Line Awards. For this year's awards, products were nominated by the public and the editors of Game Developer and Gamasutra consulted with Game Developer's advisory board to select the finalists across art, audio, middleware, game engines, networking, and programming/production tools.

most of the old torque users do that kind of things(or turn their nose up)about unity.
but like torque 3d, unity also has changed.and it is moving forward very slowly but with strong strategy.
i think the only difference between t3d and unity is unity's strategy.
that seems too much different from t3d
unity has proved without source almost everything can possible.
and torque 3d has proved it has better grafics than unity which needs high End grafics card, and t3d have almost everything with in less cost but time consuming.
no matter what but i like t3d.

I have Voted UDK not in revenge but in absence of Torque 3D. UDK is second to Torque 3D

I think that GarageGames have the BEST 2D engine (T2D and iT2D) but not the best 3D engine. However I'm really hope to see T3D as "best 3D engine" because I love Torque community and GarageGames developer.

I think that Unity will win because it's very simple to use, there're a lot of books about it, a lot of documentation, strong strategy and you can build for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Mac, PC, iOS and Android (now also the horrible GameSalad have Android support, I think that Torque really need an Android exporter).I think that GarageGames have the BEST 2D engine (T2D and iT2D) but not the best 3D engine. However I'm really hope to see T3D as "best 3D engine" because I love Torque community and GarageGames developer.

I saw the list this morning. I was distressed at first, mainly because I always have a concern about Torque remaining relevant or at least staying on the radar. We did not have a booth presence at GDC 2011, which was weird for me after working a GG booth for a couple of years.
However, I had to remind myself it is all due to one thing: focus. For several years Torque was scattering its focus, constantly trying to reinvent the image, the technology, the community, etc. When we rebooted at the beginning of this year, we had to put on the breaks and focus. We dropped support for two engines, reinvested into the community, started consolidating the licenses and so on.
Now is not the time for us to chase awards or hype up unfinished technology to steal headlines. 2011 was a rebuilding year, which allowed us to slow down a little and get our priorities straight. Would it be greatly to see Torque 3D on that list? Absolutely. It deserves to be on that list, but everyone had to focused on the 1.2 update (code, art, web, marketing, etc). Take care of the community and current tech in 2011, come back strong and blow minds in 2012. I also think it's weird to see a complete lack of dedicated 2D engines on that list. The majority of mobile/social games are 2D, and that's the big market right now.

Quote:i think we all understand that. GG already has faced too much question on price reduction+1.2 update cost.only for those reasons i did not post anything on that award in this forum, because it will certainly be asked "where is TORQUE 3D"
Now is not the time for us to chase awards....2011 was a rebuilding year...........

Considering that TGEA won the Frontline award "x" years ago ... it's kinda amusing that T3D is a gazzillion times superior.

I agree. It makes no sense that there is not even a 2D Game engine category. If it was, iT2D/T2D is definitively the best game engine i.m.o.

I can list the games out for public consumption on one hand:
1. Minion of Mirth- The granddaddy of all our projects at this point
2.Blood Clans- I actual am really impressed with these guys project, it's like the polar opposite of my project, all the systems we are still working on work in Blood Clans, and all the systems missing in Blood Clans, are next to finalized in ours (if either of us had been smart years ago, we would have found each other then and been finished now)
3.Ruin Online- which has been down forever but promises to return soon by BAG
4.ATROX NOCTIS- 6 months into testing, currently a weak public alpha test but we still have all of our best tricks completely hidden, our leader has gone as far as to have a list of banned words from even our intra-project emails, to ensure secrecy (if you've followed my posts you'll realize these aren't the standard four letter words)
I know I have not mentioned a couple of you, like I think Steve has a demo of his project out. However, other than reading here I have never heard any advertising for any other, and I actual watch for it, and look forward to the engine being mentioned in an ad.
My point being that the fact that T3D was not in the list is just as much our fault as anyone else's. There is no project that shines, is complete, and is using T3D. So, come on everyone, Get To Work!

One more thing to consider is that while Unity has many games on the market at this time, T3D has very few. The few that do exist have next to no advertising going on. I'd even include us in this statement (ATROX NOCTIS, always plug yourself), while we have been engaged in a massive guerilla campaign to expand awareness and interest in our project, we still have only effectively advertised to about 1000 people, even if we have been seen by over 200k. The simple truth of the matter is all the front runners for T3D are so busy updating our projects to new versions of the engine that forward progress is slow at best. Now, do not get me wrong this is not a bad thing. Lord knows 1.1 is infinitely better than beta 3 was, and after getting over the fact that I was going to have to drop another $50 on 1.2 after licensing the engine for $1020 so far while others are paying just a fraction of this, I'm betting 1.2 will be even better. UDK is pretty much windows only.
Unity is multiple products same as torque as far as i can tell. The more you pay the more platforms you can develop on exactly the same as torque.
Which other 'almost all' game engines did i miss?
11/12/2011 (2:57 pm)
I think there are several projects that shine that ive seen, however ive also seen that most people who publish a game are so ashamed of using a game engine that they pay to have all parts removed so they can pretend they built their own, hinterland for example has all traces of GG/Torque removed from everything.Quote:Andrea, you have said one of my major wishes from t3d.now-a-days almost all 3d engine support multi-platform.so i think it is a must have feature for a modern game engine.I'm gonna cry foul and call BS on this one, theres one engine that i know of that supports multi-platforms, and does so in a far superior way to every other product I know and thats shiva.

It is good to see they reduced their prices and have a renewed focus. However, I feel they aren't focused on the right things.
I've been considering which product to use for some of the games I want to work on. Everytime I have to rule out GG's products early on.
The fastest growing markets right now are phones/tablets and browsers. T2D doesn't have a direct capability to run in browsers as far as I can see from their specs page. iT2D doesn't do Android. T3D doesn't do any smart phones/tablets but at least does browser.
Unity has 1 product. It works in browser, on android, on iphones/ipads, directly on Windows/Mac, and consoles. Yes, when you get ready to publish on the different devices you need to buy another license which could add up quickly. Also it costs more than Torque to get the source. The plus side is you can play with the worldbuilder for free and buy the different publishing platforms when you are ready to release your product. That means no upfront costs and since you can buy one platform at a time you can wait until your product has made enough on one platform to pay for the cost of another.
First, there shouldn't be T2D and iT2D. There should be one singular 2D engine that can be released in browser, on android and on iphones. Then there should be a singular 3D engine like there is now, but it needs to also ship to android and Iphones.
The PC game market shrinks in revenue each year. Why make the company focus on that platform? Sure, T3D might be able to push out slightly better graphics than Unity, but if that is your focus you aren't going to go well. The games that make the money are the ones that can run on the widest variety of systems. That means you want the system requirements of your game to be lower, which means you don't want the extra push on graphics.
I want to use Garage Games products, I really do. Over the years I've bought plenty of them even though the 3D engines were never really finished products. But, the company has always focused on the wrong things. Now they are finally focusing on cleaning up their products and working on the documentation. That was needed years ago. Now the products need to be something that can ship a product to multiple platforms easily. Without that, Unity3D is the clear choice every time.
