by W Sidd · in Jobs · 07/26/2011 (8:50 pm) · 27 replies
Hey,
I am interested in starting a video game company. I am looking for someone with exceptional gaming industry experience i.e. experience with conception to finish product.
My background in not of gaming industry. My expertise are in business management and consulting. The ideal structure is that I, along with my current partner, will head the business unit component i.e. marketing, project management, publisher negotiations, game story development etc. We are looking for a technical person who will be in charge of building a team of programmers/developers etc and head the technical side of business.
If you are interested send me a proposal or a brief about yourself. I am located in Montreal and I am interested in setting up a studio within the same region.

Is the role on site only or remote work is also possible?
Are you looking for international collaboration or every member should work on site?
Any plans about your first game yet or it will be decided later?
What budget you have for the company and the employees / freelancers?

Still you haven't answered the key questions which are not technical: Is the role paid and what budget you have for the entire development?

A helpful hint: You probably want to have your business plan ready to go before you go asking for people to throw in with you- especially if you're going to be tight-lipped about something as basic and important as pay (if your background is in business management, then you should know this as fundamental).

It would either be a partnership or paid (salary). It will depend on the business structure and your level of interest.

Hi Sid, I'm from Mtl and I have been making video games for 12 years working as an ai & gameplay programmer, co-producer, level designers, technical director on AAA projects. I would be interested to know more about your startup. Is it possible to give me more information on your background and about the startup? thanks.

Some people joining in a game forums or game websites is required or mandated to send a structured format of their game plan, even still immature in nature being in the game development industry is not a joke some people became successful, and some not it is about sacrifice also knowing the importance of each other and knowing your own contribution or else you will be just out of the group.Since you are in the room follow the policy of the site don't make your own rule if your game project is feasible lay out all your plan in here.If I were before you created a post you already make an advance preparation before so you will not be coping up later when someone asks you and you cannot give a detailed answer.

Maybe even a random word--I could probably figure out a funny or great idea for a game if need be.
Programming? ... my background is in writing... look elsewhere. I'm a worthless programmer and a lazy animator with great ideas.
I'm also a pretty good voice actor, but that sort of talent is secondary to a good game.

If you need a person to help you develop a game or an idea for a game, contact me. I'm a cornucopia for ideas, both good and bad. Just give me a style or springboard for thought.Maybe even a random word--I could probably figure out a funny or great idea for a game if need be.

Now that my smart assness is out of the way, I can see what you might be trying to do here.
You are probably looking for a programmer who knows artists, etc. and is interested in partnering with you for a percentage. That's going to be difficult, not impossible, but difficult. Especially if you don't share your game idea for all we know you could be a 14 year old who "wants to make games". You have to have some level of trust with your fellow man in order to get people to take you seriously. If you just cling to this secrecy you'll attract no one. For all we know it's Hello Kitty Island Adventures in Space or something equally boring / derivative. We may not be interested. It's important to SHARE as much info as possible and think of the worst case scenario.
Someone "steals" your idea, well you probably have a dozen more where that came from, unless your creatively bankrupt. I've seen ideas I've fleshed out in 90+ page design documents suddenly spring onto the screen from someone else. It happens, people have a lot of the same experiences, which generate similar ideas, even miles apart. It all comes down to luck and commitment to getting those ideas out there and made. At least by posting about them you'd have evidence that you, "thought of it first" and attract interested parties to help you out, but I digress.
Being in a startup myself for the past four years I can safely say that it's going to take a lot of money. Even doing our small scale projects (2), with the majority of the project being done on volunteer time and splitting the "future net profits" I've personally thrown in $18,000 and considering I only make $28,000 a year you can tell that I've been eating a lot of generic energy drinks and ramen, but that's because I'm committed to seeing this stuff completed. Recently our hard work has attracted a publisher, so this pay check to pay check non-sense may very well end soon. Now, you could avoid this slow development cycle by having decent seed money of say, $100,000 and keeping your project relatively small. If you were to at least say you had X amount of seed money then people would start to take you a bit more seriously. The only reason my team and I are doing this in this backwards, doesn't usually happen or workout, kind of way is because we started it as a college "hobby" project and then realized, "hey this could become something for reals!" and continued working on it post graduation.
Also perhaps a resume about you and your current teams experiences might help. For instance I have two degrees, one in Business Administration and one in Video Production (with a focus on editing and screen writing). I did a year long internship with an independent film studio and was a lead member of their writing pool. I have made a variety of test game projects dating back to middle school and kind of know how to script (use to program in Atari Basic, VB, C++ and Turbo Pascal , but haven't in years). I am use to working with people internationally and have experiences managing teams of ~22 people both in my day job and while "making games". I can sculpt very well and quickly, but cannot draw to save my life. I am pretty good at working inside level editors and I have experience designing levels that make environmental sense and are "fun". <=== That kind of stuff is good to know, so we know you have experience and aren't just some guy wanting to leach off the creativity of others while contributing nothing to the table.
Also I know people in Montreal.

Oh wow. You are one of those, holding your idea like a precious jewel, refusing to share (and thus having everyone not take you seriously) not realizing that about a dozen people have that same idea, but also lack the programming knowledge and funds to see it to completion. How cute. Now that my smart assness is out of the way, I can see what you might be trying to do here.

Most of all, odds are your idea is already being/already is developed by someone else.
08/16/2011 (8:32 pm)
I hate to say it W Sidd, but ideas are worth nothing. It's the execution that matters. You must bring an equal amount of work to your team or nobody is going to work with you. It would be good to post a resume of what you can bring to the table before you go asking people to join you. Most of all, odds are your idea is already being/already is developed by someone else.

Read this before you try to start any kind of game project...

@W Sidd: Here's a good thread to read on starting up a team, since you seem to be having a hard time in putting one together. The genre may or may not be the same, but the fundamentals are there, and were touched on by William above.Read this before you try to start any kind of game project...

I have the expertise to raise money.. I can prepare and pitch business plans to banks/venture capitalist etc.. I was looking for someone in Montreal so that instead of typing everything out here I would physically meet or talk to that person over the phone... I have over 10 years of business experience and I am currently working as a Sales Operations Manager in one of the largest firms in Canada.
So please guyz lets not have anymore discussions on this!!!! If you have held a senior or mid level position with a major gaming studio email me at waqar00@sympatico.ca and we can discuss things in person or over the phone.... If you are not in Montreal, i am simply not interested at this point....

Look guyz... I have no intentions of starting an argument here... so lets get a few things straight... I am not a programmer/artist or anyone with any interest in technical aspects of game development.... Having said that, I am interested in managing the studio or in business terms a business unit...I have the expertise to raise money.. I can prepare and pitch business plans to banks/venture capitalist etc.. I was looking for someone in Montreal so that instead of typing everything out here I would physically meet or talk to that person over the phone...
