Does Torque Import dae files from DAZ Studio?

by Anonymous · in Torque Game Engine · 06/16/2011 (11:32 am) · 6 replies

Hello,
I am thinking about buying torque 3d and I know it says that it imports dae files. However, I export my files from DAZ Studio to dae, and in the past I've been using Unity 3D to make my game... And although unity says it imports collada files, it really doesn't. So before I buy, I was wondering if someone could assure me that Torque will import .dae files from DAZ Studio? Because that is crucial to my game.

Thanks in advance!

~Susan

I would recommend downloading the tools demo and giving the import a shot. It may be that DAZ studio does not have a stable Collada export that may be causing a problem. Does DAZ support the OpenCOLLADA specification?

Torque will import files sourced from Daz.

I was able to port the Michael figure into T3D, but not with the skeleton or animations, fairly easily by using the mesh decimation plugin Daz offers for sale to reduce the number of polygons--Daz models are much higher rez.

Animations and skeletons have been successfully ported, by Brokeass Games, I think. If you go to Daz' site, there are about 4 rigged Daz models available which were produced by a collaboration between BAG and Daz, and those are already completely set up for Torque use. Here's one:

Also, be sure you buy your models from developer.daz3d.com, and not www.daz3d.com--the licenses and model pricing are different if you want to reuse the models in games.

I just noticed this question is under the Torque Game Engine forum... not T3D, to which my response applies.

No, Torque Game Engine (TGE) doesn't import Collada files, only the *new* engine, T3D, can do that.

Torque Game Engine was the first branch of the engine family and hasn't been in production for some years now. T3D just saw its 1.1 release last week as of this writing.

While there is still a large community of developers making use of the codebase, the Collada standard hadn't been developed at the time and unless someone has gone to the great deal of trouble of writing an importer for the format, TGE will make use only of DTS and DIF models.

Oh sorry I didn't notice I put this in the wrong forum... I bought T3D not TGE though, so it should still work.

The main problem with DAZ models, is they are made for renders, not games. their polycounts are rediculously high for game use and really need to be reduced.
