A question, I am not sure where to begin

I have the Medieval Characters 4 pack purchased from the store. When I read the description it sounded like it already had the models using the sword that comes with it. The sword is separate though. My original goal was to run the 3D models through SpriteWorks and create 2D sprite sheets for use in my game with sword attack.

Pardon my not knowing 3D/ 3D art well at all. I do not have 3DS or what not to load the .max file into and 'weld' the sword to the model. I use Milkshape which seems to have a lot of importers but cannot seem to import .max.

I also have SoftImage Mod Tool, but still learning, like really green behind the ears.

Does anyone by chance know of a simpler solution to get the sword welded to the models hand without requiring me to get a copy of 3DS? Or even a way to import .dts or .max into Milkshape hopefully keeping the animation.

I assume I am going all wrong about this. I am a programmer and have just brushed the surface of 3D modeling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My hero needs his sword. :P

I have recently obtained a lot of free time now that my kids are growing older. Baker's Game Studio is now fully operational with no conditions on compile time(occasional runtime) errors. Accepted by Microsoft BizSpark. Time to get serious.

Ultimate Unwrap 3D will import .dts files, which makes some people mad, and then it can import into Milkshape. It will import animation to some degree, but I've only used .b3d, so I'm not sure about the animations from a .dts. And it's a whole lot cheaper than using 3DS Max.

You might want to check out Fragmotion for doing animations. It's better than using Milkshape, but you'll still have to use MS3D to export to Torque.

BTW, I live about a mile from Eglin AFB.

I have found the animation importing from a DTS file into Ultimate Unwrap 3D to be a bit dodgy but it sometimes works well. I have used it for converting DTS's into Milkshape (and other formats) a number of times and can recommend it =)
