Terrain, I need help!

by Treaver Hoerig · in Torque 3D Professional · 05/22/2011 (2:32 pm) · 5 replies

I just bought Torque 3D and I was told I just needed to buy the engine, and 3DMax, What do I need for the Terrain? I need the software to be free, and user friendly!
Thank you!

What do you mean for the terrain ? To Generate heightmaps ?
You can create your terrains realtime by hand within T3D, or you can generate a heightmap from various tools like geocontrol2(129 euros), L3DT($35), Terragen2($299, though I think tg1 is free now?), Vue has a free version but im not sure on the limitations of it.

Also, you dont 'need' 3ds max, whoever told you that, get hold of them and slap them with the receipt... milkshape, blender, deled etc are all capable of creating dts shapes usable for torque.

You can also hand draw heightmaps in any paint program, but you'll probably end up manually smoothing and tweaking them in game.

you do realize torque 3d has an in-game terrain editor, right?

I would recommend reading the
official documentation
. The World Editor > Adding Objects > Terrains section will get you started.

Yeah, yeah, the in-game editor is nice - but sometimes it's just easier to hand-draw a heightmap for broad brushstrokes. I always end up tweaking it in game, but it lets me get the general landscape in quickly.

DEM data is fun, too - though I guess that has to be converted to a heightmap. I have made a few terrains of my old home town; very fun.
