What's your Ping?

Just curious about everyone's connection speed to the Shockwave servers... please post your connection type and average ping speed. .....Does the connection speed make the player?
T1: 50-60 ms
T1 (when the network's being pissy): 150-200 ms
56k (on a good day) 180-250 ms

FWIW, Homelan servers are the worst today (and generally usually at the bottom) at around 165ms, just above what appear to be some user servers (for hacked maps) at around 240ms.
The speakeasy test above shows my download speed to be currently 1.3mbps and my upload speed to be 128kbps...which is standard for DSL throttling the upload... I'm actually impressed considerign Verizoninformed us long ago we were well outside the listed distance from the node to be getting DSL at all.

I have a 1.5 DSL connection. My Shockwave server pings today start around 94ms and go up to around 105ms.FWIW, Homelan servers are the worst today (and generally usually at the bottom) at around 165ms, just above what appear to be some user servers (for hacked maps) at around 240ms.

1 ms!

OK, explain this:
Lately I've had some slow pings on my T1 (200+ ms). During these times I checked speed using speakeasy (thanks for the post Az, this is much better than Cnet's meter).... my speed was 2500 K down and 1600 K up. When the network is happy, I get a much better connection (ping of 50-60 ms, speeds of 5000 K up/down!). Other than just bad luck, is there any way to explain the poor connection to TT servers? It's frustrating to have T1 speeds when surfing the net while having dial up speeds for TT!
Thanks,

Anyone else care to post their pings/connections?

There's been an upgrade to our network, and now I have good 50 ms pings all day long (not just in the early morning). Now I'm out of excuses for those "doh! situations", unless I'm playing on the 'ol 56k modem from home. Soon I'll get a real job with real money and get a real cable/DSL connection... Anyone else care to post their pings/connections?

CTF usually at the top with about 100-150ms
Shockwave 170-200ms
HomeLAN 200-250ms
Independant servers vary dramatically.

Hey Fil: you and only you can see your pings. Look in the lower right-hand corner in the game info box (map info, ping, etc.). Pings will vary according to the servers, time of day, solar flares, number of players in the game, and amount of gouda you eat. Pings are given in ms.LC50

Solar flares, lol...good one.

" It helps. Also, make sure there are no background programs that suck bandwidth while running (AOL, Norton automatic update, etc) Also if you're pinging above 100 on dsl/cable and you cant figure out why, try running this Diagnostic tool. It should help a little.

p.s. sorry I never play anymore, but work beckons.

Im on cable (3673 down/376 up) and I always ping between 60/70 on the shockwave servers. If you're having any problems, or suspect that your connection is bottlenecking somewhere, open up command prompt, and type "tracert ~Baby Clax

Thanks Clax! Re: not playing--- you are missed. Take a coffee break and play a little scrum every once and a while... all work and no play make Baby Clax cranky.LC50

Im on a Mac and I set my RWIN to 66608, it seems to improve things some.i also turn off delayed acks. I use 'Cocktail' to alter the settings.
Can be a tad higher/lower some days. Im on the west coast.
I've run a T1 as well. I notice no difference. Same ol inconsistant Az. Same goes when I run a server (no ping).
Server ran great with 10 players at T1 usually. However, going to a T3 made the full server run even better
Here's a great site with modem tools & bandwidth speed tests:
www.dslreports.com/tools
Can any one tell me how to go about turning selective acks on? Im running OSX 10.2.6.
