T3D 1.1 Preview - (and previous betas) Wide screen resolutions are stretched - NOT A BUG
by David Jauregui · in Torque 3D Professional · 04/11/2011 (9:26 pm) · 9 replies
Build: 1.1 preview Pro, happens on all older T3d betas as well
Platform: Windows 7 64 bit (likely in others as well)
Target: visible in all windows, most visible in main game
Issues: Wide screen 16x9 resolutions are stretched along both edges of the screen
Steps to Repeat:
1. Launch the game
2. Open the options and choose any widescreen aspect ratio, if you have multi-monitors and can choose windowed, you can very easily stretch your window across both monitors, keep the window thinner.
3. Look around the terrain, if you center an object then turn right or left you will see the object stretch, and if you have a very wide resolution, it is stretched horribly. So instead of being able to see more terrain/screen space, you get the edges stretched along it.
Suggested Fix: None really, but the screen shouldn't stretch; it should display more area. The point of the widescreen resolution is so you can get additional screen space/view space, not stretch the edges.

I know what he means steve, place a sphere in the center of your view, and then turn so its at the edge of the screen, it turns oval

[edit] wait - I thought that distortion was called by FOV settings ...

Ah ... gotcha! That's what happens to the sun when it gets in the corners, sunflare looks funny.[edit] wait - I thought that distortion was called by FOV settings ...

This is what you get when trying to apply a FOV to a limited space such as a screen. It's not a bug, it's just a fact of putting a 3D world on a flat screen. If you look hard enough, you'll see it on your TV and other games as well. It's just something you have to deal with.

on a side note, can anyone open http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/125379 ? I get a cloudflare error every time like its timed out ...

yeah and messing with the FOV too much will lead towards a fisheye lens effect.on a side note, can anyone open http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/125379 ? I get a cloudflare error every time like its timed out ...

Cloudfail issue might be getting fixed in the near future.

I'm of the understanding that lower FOV means less distortion - I believe Call of Lawyers works at 65 degrees FOV.Cloudfail issue might be getting fixed in the near future.

And usually in the morning (GMT+1) I have no chance at all in viewing any GG site page.
They say it happens when the daily backup is occurring, anyway I think it's a strange (a poor...) behaviour for a serious hosting service to have a site down for often more than 1 hour every morning...

Andy Me too I have some problm sometimes in viewing this thread you mentioned... Often I have to refresh the page 3 / 4 times before it loads...And usually in the morning (GMT+1) I have no chance at all in viewing any GG site page.

giorgio, I have the same thing every morning prettymuch, its night time in the US so i presume thats why they do it at that time

Yeah steve, but if you make the fov higher, thats when the middle seems stretched farther away, with more distortion to the sides, like a fisheye camera lens causes.giorgio, I have the same thing every morning prettymuch, its night time in the US so i presume thats why they do it at that time

And you get extreme pinching at default FOV if you have superwide vistas. (3840x2160) I had been trying to work on my two monitors in a wide screen format and noticed it was very distorted along the edges. The only way I was able to get it looking decent was taking the FOV down to 35 and below where everything is stretched slightly so it is not as noticeable. At 25 FOV everything seems to be evenly pinched but you lose your perspective too (your gun is merely the end of the barrel).
As a side question to all of this, is there a way to set the FOV dependant on resolution?

I played with the FOV but was unable to make it "right." Is there a way to mitigate this fish lens effect? And you get extreme pinching at default FOV if you have superwide vistas. I'm working on a 1080p TV and if I go from 4:3 to 16:9 I get to see more viewable space down the sides.
