I love / hate TX
Can I buy it off of whom ever owns it now?
And how much do you think it would it cost to create a 2d engine of similar quality?
BTW
I totally predicted the TX crash!!!!!!! in 2009!!!!

I feel that the best situation is that Microsoft would buy it. Imagine somebody working on all of the problems we have. I feel that it would help TX and XNA quite a bit.

I would say GG are hedging their bets with TX, kinda keeping it around "just in case" while they try to catch up with Unity and UDK (again negligible, Both have become ubiquitously hip compared to GG) In fact it would confound me why anyone would choose to use T3D or iT2D at all as opposed to the aforementioned.
I only use TX due to the XBLIG distribution option.
I'm beginning to feel GG is more oriented towards the "heaving geek" bedroom coders planning "the worlds most awesome FPS on PC" who wont actually release anything commercially viable, while the competition gets leaner and more hip by the day with more creative flexible devs picking up the latter engines.
Its a shame because GG could have carved a real long tail and niche market making XBLIG middle ware, but that's not where middleware profits are; the big money is in mobile or web based dev now and GG are waaay behind on that one (ironic considering they were a pioneer of it initially)
anyway, venting >< I will still use TX till my XNA gets up to scratch =)

Hmm I think MS picking up the tab is negligible, "once bitten twice shy" the CreatorsClub version of TX was up and down like a yo-yo and then stayed off permanently.I would say GG are hedging their bets with TX, kinda keeping it around "just in case" while they try to catch up with Unity and UDK (again negligible, Both have become ubiquitously hip compared to GG) In fact it would confound me why anyone would choose to use T3D or iT2D at all as opposed to the aforementioned.

1.5 years ago I was looking to buy a 3D engine and I hated unity the product didn't look as good as what T3D promised. So I bought T3D. Today I am using unity and I love it :)
But I still am using TX for the reason you mentioned. XBLIG distribution. Its not everyday that you get to develop for a console so I like to take advantage of that.

Hoddie I agree with you completely :). It would just be nice to have a huge company like MS take control over TX. 1.5 years ago I was looking to buy a 3D engine and I hated unity the product didn't look as good as what T3D promised. So I bought T3D. Today I am using unity and I love it :)

I wouldn't discount GG so quickly. I'm sure they have a few aces up their sleeves. The will quickly catch up once their feet are firmly under the table again, even more so when the community has been rallying around to ensure that they do (from all engines). It was a bummer on the Torque X side I know and I was planning on using that engine at some point but a few things had to give.

Imagine if there was a team of 30 paid people working on TX like unity or UDK. ;)

The CEV is great. Its just that volenteerism can only go so far :)Imagine if there was a team of 30 paid people working on TX like unity or UDK. ;)

That's probably cheaper than owning the code rights anyway.
More middleware for middleware
I stopped doing the whole iso metric free roaming level thing because txb isn't really there yet when managing lots of assets and levels.
Imagine an editor like Unity, for 2d only, that exports level files for TX :)
How expensive could that be? Can someone ballpark a number for me?
I just read somewhere that MH creates separate txb project files to deal with the slow down, great idea..

Well maybe another more robust editor would suffice .That's probably cheaper than owning the code rights anyway.

Hardly surprising. It's not as if it's a big effort for them just to keep selling TX 3.15 with a disclaimer on it - in fact it's almost zero effort; it's just there already. And they can pull in a bit of extra cash and attention to their products, since the community has rather handily sorted out the XNA4 side of things for them. Really it would be dumb of them NOT to keep selling it (although it wouldn't be the first time we've seen them do something dumb ;-)

I would hazard a guess sometime there will be a TX3 but I wouldn't hold your breath.Last I read GG wanted to focus on a XNA 4 compliant WindowsPhone7 product rather than Xbox engine. It's a shitter I know...Always confounded me why they quit on TX. There's always FlatRedBall, Sunburn and Kitae but they are nowhere near TX level yet.
Save the cash for a proper XDK or hiring a GG or other developer to implement fixes to yer liking. Either that or re-dev in pure XNA. I'm in a similar frustrated conundrum so your not alone !
