Any T3D Game/Project Freezes

by Quinton Delpeche · in Technical Issues · 02/12/2011 (9:36 pm) · 4 replies

The weirdest things has been happening to my laptop recently and I just can't figure out what the problem is. Any T3D product, whether custom compiled or based off a Standard T3D binary ... hell even Steve's great tutorial ... hangs my machine at varying intervals and frequencies.

I have an Acer TravelMate 7730, 4GB Ram, 2x 500GB HDD, GeForce 9600M 1GB Mobile GFX Card, running Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit. It is sitting on top of a Logitech Altos laptop stand ... to rule out freezing. I have also recently re-installed it ... TWICE ... to rule out software.

Last night I confirmed that I have the latest graphic drivers and Windows updates installed. I have even deactivated the Gadget Bar ... but to no avail.

I will be working in the Toolset in Windowed mode, or running around in Windowed/Fullscreen mode in a game project ... and all of a sudden the machine will completely freeze. No keyboard, no mouse ... the only way to rectify the situation is a One Finger Salute (i.e. Hard Power Off).

I have tried to stop any running processes in attempt to reduce load ... but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas or are experiencing a similar situation?

Failing a solution, I will need to purchase a Desktop machine to rectify the problem and finish current projects I am contracted on.

Thanks

Hi Julian,

I am using Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010).
I am compiling using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional.

I did a fresh compile this morning after all updates.

Thanks

So I woke up this morning ... deciding that today was the day I sorted this problem out or came to some type of conclusion.

Either I was going to win or the laptop was going in the bin!!! :)

So after a frustrating day, I have now done the following.
1). Laptop has been restored to Factory Defaults and is now running Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit.
2). All extra hardware has also been removed (including the second HDD).
3). Only the base software was installed (i.e. No Office, etc.) and I installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

So I powered up the FPS Example from the T3D 1.0.1 release and started working ... 5 minutes in ... the machine froze.

Feeling frustrated and in a last ditch attempt ... I uninstalled MSSE and rebooted my machine.

I have now been running the FPS Example for over an hour and have been happily using the Toolset. I then powered up my custom compiled version and viola ... 2 hours and still going strong.

So it looks like my AV software was the issue ... so my question is, what AV software are you guys running and have you experienced anything like this before?

Hopefully this is the final fix and next weekend I can revert back to 64 ... we'll see how it goes. :)

Okay ... finally managed to track down the root cause of this issue.

It wasn't my AV Software ... and it wasn't the Operating System or the drivers or even the Hardware.

It was frikkin Windows 7 Desktop and Visual Effects.

I have disabled that (not just the shortcut but completely) and I have been able to work on the Game and the Tools for prolonged periods of time ... even left them running over night to see.

Yay for me ... boo for Windows 7. I have now returned to Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit and everything is happy in my world again.
