T3D's $99 Price Tag Questions
by Quentin Headen · in General Discussion · 01/21/2011 (8:06 am) · 28 replies
Hello everyone! First off, let me say again that I am super happy that GG is back!!! I love GG, and I know it is going to do well for now on.
Now let me get to my question. I see that Torque 3D is $99 for a limited time with full source. I really want to jump on this deal because I truly didn't have $1,000 to buy the T3D source, but I really wanted the source in case I had to add something that wasn't there. So my question is this. If I buy Torque 3D for $99, and it is currently in beta 3, will I get the 1.1 update for free? Also, what happens when new versions of T3D comes out? Will there be upgrade pricing?
Thanks

without being rude, the company nearly whent down and I could of lost my investment of $1000 plus other apps and such I have purchased and to thank the loyalty of old customers you give new customers the same thing for 1/10th of the price to make a quick $ ??Again not trying to be rude but why??

The company DID go down. The new owners bought the rights to the engines and revived the GarageGames name.

However, there are a lot of benefits to the price reduction. We get to grow the community, return to what made GG popular and consolidate our product lines to something that makes a lot more sense. As for taking care of old members, we are very much about that as well. Rather than wipe the forums and start over with a new company, the new owners want to retain everyone that was around. We are working on overall site maintenance, improving the forum and community experience, getting back in the trenches with everyone, and trying to deliver on the improvements to your investment. The current price is an absolute steal. While I believe it is worth so much more (closer to what you paid), this is the first step in returning to what made GarageGames great. Low cost engines are not the only factor, though. Aside from the price, we are all ears in hearing what else we can do to make this company align with your expectations.

@peterski777 - We have this discussion going on in many places, but I don't have a canned response. I am sorry you feel this way and I do think there is validity to how you feel. It's not an uncommon take on the situation of software being reduced after purchase. However, there are a lot of benefits to the price reduction. Otherwise I cant think of how you would make up for new members getting it for 1/10 of the price to enable a quick cash flow.
Seriously, not trying to be rude as I keep saying but something has to be done.

Possibly giving original owners who paid $1000 something also as its STILL in beta, maybe Another FREE Transferable licence for T3D as it costs you nothing but a serial number.Otherwise I cant think of how you would make up for new members getting it for 1/10 of the price to enable a quick cash flow.

Remember back in the day when small upgrades to TGE were free but major upgrades required you to pay a small upgrade fee? Well, maybe GG will charge for T3D on the next "major" update, maybe from 1.1 to 2.0 or something, and allow the guys who paid $1,000 to get the upgrade for free.
I'm not sure what they are going to do, but knowing GG, they won't forget the guys who shelled out 1 grand.

The guys who shelled out top dollar *like myself* gave that money to TP->IAC->Mr Diller.
Erik Graham's GG has not got a penny of it and Erik Graham does not owe anybody anything.
[edited] to spell the guy's name correctly ...

As others have pointed out, the company did "go down." We bought the assets, not the company. We rehired a lot of the employees, dropped some products, loosened up the EULA, resurrected the GarageGames name, streamlined the product offerings, and we slashed all prices to $99. Not to $100, but to $99 - just because that's $1 less than any Torque engine has ever cost.
Make no mistake - we will lose money doing this. Sales will increase, but not by 10x. So why are we doing this? I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
I can tell you this much - I'm looking forward, not backward. I believe Eric and his team can do great things, but I'm not going to sit here and hype what the future has in store for the whole community. I'm not going to promise, or even talk about, products that don't yet exist. I'm sure not going to take anyone's money for those products and then not deliver. But I'm also not going to be held hostage by decisions made in the past by another company. I'll be honest and up front with you, but I'm going to stand my ground on this. $99 is an absurdly good price, whether you are upgrading, adding new team members or here as a first time customer. One price. One product. No more messing around.

You, and anyone who owns any version of T3D will get the upgrade to 1.1 final for free. Future patches and bug fixes will be free. Like most software, *major* version updates to T3d will probably cost you, but nothing has been decided yet. Let's just say that major means major - there won't be any games like "let's slap a coat of paint on it and call it version 2."

Yeah, you are right on that one.
@Erik
Thanks a lot Erik for the response. You see, this is what a good company really is; when the owners, CEO, etc. are in touch with their customers. That's why mom & pop type stores will be around for a LONG, LONG time. They keep their customers coming back, and build a strong following/community.
Thanks for listening to our requests.

I fully understand what you are saying about a new company and I am also happy that you decided to keep this engine going.
All the point I was trying to make was, as you have said $99 is absurdly cheap, so why risk upsetting existing members just to make a quick $ with a new company. I would honestly understand $599 or even $500 but $99 makes me a little upset is all as it it worth way more than this, as you said.
I dont need a lesson in company ownership as other might think, if some are happy with this then that is entirely their choice, I have not slated anyone or been rude in any way but I too have an opinion and believe I have a right to express this politely.

Don't get me wrong. I want to make $. I'm not going to claim other wise. But $99 for an engine like T3D is not the way to do it.

It is your base assumption that is off. This is not about us trying to "make a quick $" Don't get me wrong. I want to make $. I'm not going to claim other wise. But $99 for an engine like T3D is not the way to do it.
