Sweet Parallax Terrain Materials Pack?
by Devin Passage · in Torque 3D Professional · 12/01/2010 (8:32 pm) · 31 replies
Anybody care to make a lil pack of parallax-ready texturemaps for terrain materials? I need sand, forest, rocks, volcanic rocks, etc. Would anybody be interested in helping to get something like this together?

I'm now settled at 160 terrain materials, all 1024 resolution and have Diffuse, Detail, Normal & Parallax.
Cliff: 15
Cracked Earth: 10
Dirt/Mud: 30
Grass: 19
Gravel: 19
Rubble: 4
Sand/Ash/Desert: 28
Snow: 5
Stone: 20
Woodlands: 10
The pack is not just the materials though, it is aimed at being an "environment creation pack", including premade missions from high res heightmaps, many ambient shapes for cliff overhangs, boulders, rock outcrops, rubble & leaf piles and other various stuff that might come in handy in creating open worlds. Think Fallout's terrain additions for an idea of where I'm aiming this packs primary use at.

You're doing a great job Andy, as soon as I get my hands on some of these I'll post a blog vid of my project :) that's how much I think they'd improve the look of what i have.

I'm not really liking the grass, but the rocks "rock!"

The terrain textures are done however i still have alot of models to do to be able to release it as a pack. Unfortunately over new years i recieved some bad news about my dads health so have taken some time out off hobbies and such so my only suitable dev time is weekends *if* im at home. It will get there shortly but we have alot of stuff on our plate at BAG atm with various packs MACK, persistance kit, ecstacy plus other bits which are all 'about there' and just on final snagging now afaik. Anyways i might be able to put out 'something' shortly even if it means splitting the whole lot into smaller themed packs instead of the whole lot as one as its already over 2gb of textures before any models etc are in there lol.

No rush. I was just checking in. Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope he gets better.

Have realised a better way of showing the normal/parallax maps is by turning the detail map's strength to 0, honestly cant believe I didnt realise that by now... anyway heres a dried out cracked desert/mud texture, and then just the normal/parallax image of it
Also done some stratified rock textures, these are with the side projection on, so doesent have any parallax detail from them in these images, just normal map shading. They do have parallax data in the normals but it isnt used by t3d for side projection, however will work if used with normal projection or on a dts shape. Its the side projection which causes the criss cross texturing on the flatter surfaces at the bottom of the slopes if you havent used it before, but creates nice cliff faces as it goes with the contours.
Will soon be sorting out the map's and shapes for the set.
The maps will be done in the method i use from geocontrol2, using a single diffuse covering the whole heightmap, but using separate layers to use multiple detail maps on it, its an old pic but this is one of the terrains done like that
