Sahara Discussion Thread

Sahara is a tech extension to Torque 3D 1.1 Beta 1, 2 and 3 engines (1.1 Final soon to follow) which lets you create more realistic game environments by generating naturally accumulated dirt, snow, dust or any other material over your game shapes. It is a successor to our Cliff Construction Kit. This thread is our official discussion thread.

No, it shouldn't collide with it, Sahara is pretty low level compared to that resource, so I don't think that they even have one file they work on in common.

oh snap, didnt realise mr hall had posted a fix for that resource in b3

just as a heads up, the beta 2 and beta 3 downloads for sahara in the accts/products page on bitgap both link to a different filename than the one it says they link to, and they both link to the same beta2 file, so there is no patch file for beta3.

@Bloodknight: This is because the Beta 2 version works with Beta 3 out of the box. But to make that evident, we split them up, as many people would look for a Beta 3 version when visiting our site. So there is a beta 3 patch.

both patch file and instructions have quite different line numbers for both of these files.
these files are :-
sourcematerialsprocessedShaderMaterials.cpp
toolsmaterialEditorscriptsmaterialEditor.ed.cs
i dont know if TP shipped a different Beta3 at any point, but i redownloaded and installed a 2nd copy of beta3 and the same problem existed.
Also, unless i missed something i cannot find the functionality that existed with the CCK, was this removed in favour of effecting the global material, or is it still in there somwhere hiding? :)
edit: if i knew how to make patch files i'd make em and post em here.

Current tools such as the Forest editor can be used to distribute the shapes over the terrain if this is what you're looking for. There might be a replicator addition coming out, but again, this is not the CCK. It does not include the same Cliff replicator in the CCK nor does it have material swapping for the cliffs that come with it.
As for the patches, I'll verify that and publish a new patch for Beta 3. It did not fail for me the last time I tried nor did I get any complaints so far.
I assume you don't yet have this installed then? Let me know if you need help.

This is not the CCK. You get the CCK shapes as gratis, but this is a different product. It did not aim to be the same. It is a successor to that, as the CCK is not being developed further. This is my first time installing in beta3, ive had it up and running previously and made some quite interseting areas :)

Actually. not so much the replicator, but i really really liked adding individual cliffs with indiovidual scaling on both model and textures as well has having different accumulated mats on different cliffs, hoever if i cant get them to work nicely together, then the sahara option is the most useful :)This is my first time installing in beta3, ive had it up and running previously and made some quite interseting areas :)

I previously did manual install and had everything working no problem but an issue arose causing me to rebuild my project from scratch so figured I would try the patches. did fresh download/install of both T3D1.1 b3 and sahara, problem still persists. guess its back to the manual install for now

Thanks for letting me know, Donald. I'll update the Beta 3 patch in the coming weeks and notify you via this thread.

Unfortunately not yet, but in about a month it will get this update along with the CCK to go 1.8.2 and an announcement of something new. I've been having a full plate for a while and could not yet spend enough time with Sahara lately. That will hopefully change soon.

Great Konrad - looking forward to the updates and the "something new". :)

Also, there's a new version of Sahara compatible with Torque 3D 2009 1.1 Beta 1. It should now be available under your account if you're a Sahara licensee.
I also did a few updates to the website to better create automatic installation instructions when there is more than one patch file. (Sahara has a game and a source patch file).
Cheers!
@Hans: The "something new" part might take some time, but I can't say even a single word about it before I'm 100% sure it can or can't be done. :)
@JoZ: Many thanks for your help with having Avira ignore the Meshloop binary and not report it as a false positive! I owe you one! :)
@others: Avira erroneously reported Meshloop.exe as a false positive which Avira acknowledged and promised to have better heuristics in a coming update that exclude it from being falsely identified as a positive match. It's better that you guys know about it - in case you've been using it and this came up.
I plan to write a blog about Meshloop sometime. Check it out here: http://www.bitgap.com/products/11/meshloop.html

great to hear Konrad. Could have used it last week when I had to rebuild my project but it was easy enough to just hand merge that one file. Thanks for the update and looking forward to the "something new" when/if it happens.

We're experiencing technical difficulties with our server at the moment. We're on it, I hope it will be back up within a few hours at most. Thank you.

Just a little update on the outage - it will take us about 12 hours to remedy the issue. Unfortunately our servers will not be reachable until then.

I had been thinking about the CCK, but when T3D came out I thought I'd wait for it to be updated. I'm glad I waited, Sahara is off the hook man! You have outdone yourself. This is on my list for March... my finances are in the toilet at the moment - lol.
