Sahara Discussion Thread

by Konrad Kiss · in Torque 3D Professional · 08/16/2010 (9:06 pm) · 165 replies

Sahara is a tech extension to Torque 3D 1.1 Beta 1, 2 and 3 engines (1.1 Final soon to follow) which lets you create more realistic game environments by generating naturally accumulated dirt, snow, dust or any other material over your game shapes. It is a successor to our Cliff Construction Kit. This thread is our official discussion thread.

Sahara is now available for purchase here.

I've updated the OP with a tech demo video and just wanted to announce the release dates in the coming days.

Whoever purchased the Cliff Construction Kit up until this post will be eligible for a free upgrade to Sahara.

Sahara will be available for sale sometime over the weekend. It's indie price is going to be $59.95.

I'll blog about it all asap, too.

Looking every bit as cool as I had imagined it would Konrad! Already thinking this will be a most awesome addition to any Torque3D project. Grandiose visions of massive climatological changes are blurring through my mind :D

I will look forward to getting this, how hard is the merge?

@Michael: Thank you! :) It really is fun tweaking all the settings and seeing the changes take shape right away on all the affected materials. Plus, this version makes use of detail normal maps too (almost everything uses these in the video), and that makes it a lot more fun! :)

@Chris: It's very easy to add, since most of the code is new files. It's also very unlikely that this solution would collide with any other packs. All in all, it takes about 5 minutes to install via copy / paste.

you have out passed yourself and your team Konrad.

in the system is it easy to add additional cliffs, textures, normals, spec, etc?

Thanks, Hans.

You don't need to add stuff. You can use any of your current models in your game.

I'll write more about it in my blog, but using a material to be accumulated on top of a shape is as much as choosing an Accu Map (much like choosing a Diffuse or a Normal map) in the Material Editor and setting 5 sliders till your shape looks good. Of course cliffs shapes and materials are bundled if you need them - but as you see in the video, I used many Torque default shapes, such as the buggy or Gideon.

It was all added to the Material Editor, so it's very easy to use.

you sir are a legend!

I want this so freakin much you wouldn't believe it, makes me all sticky thinking about it... need testers ? lol

Also will this coincide a 1.1b2 release for the CCK ?

Thanks Andy. :)

This works with 1.1b2 only. And upwards, I'll be supporting all future beta and release versions of Torque 3D for the foreseeable future.

Sahara is out! Check it out right here!

If you were a licensee of the CCK (and opted in for email notifications), you should already have received an email from me telling you that Sahara is downloadable from under your account.

Please let me know if things install smoothly, if it works as expected. The official announcement will be later during next week.

Have fun using the kit!

Not being a programer ... I'm not sure as to what I should be doing to apply a *.patch file ... is it part of SVN?

Also the line numbers of the Manual Install differ from the released Beta and the Trunk version devs have access to.

If it's a unified diff, the patch command does the job:

Congratulations on the release, Konrad! I'll have to mark this one for later. Crazy amounts of stuff I need to buy lately :)
