The site wish list

by Ronny Bangsund · in Site Feedback · 08/11/2010 (1:38 am) · 90 replies

Derek suggested making a thread for this, so here it goes.

We know the site has some bugs and we know search is terrible. They also know, and are working on it. So let's list what we want improved, added or changed other than that!

My personal wishes:

  1. Private messages - hide our e-mail and let the site mail us instead.
  2. Categories for the resource section - one per engine would be fine, and optional private posts for engine changes so only engine owners can access it.
  3. A repository for resources would also be nice, especially for larger modifications which constantly change. Also good practice for all of those people out there who never heard of source control :)

What else do you lot want? Add to this, as they'll be watching this thread :)

yeah, so I'm dyslectic and type with my feet, it has no bearing on the "issue" of having the torque master server fail ~3 times a day....

@Deepscratch - Do you recall about when this started happening?

Also, where are you located if you don't mind me asking?

Can we please have the old forum search back! This forum is almost impossible to use now that you cant find what your looking for. GG use to be full of knowledge, now its all lost.

The old forum search had engine specific searches and would give you the results you're looking for, google gives you hundreds of results across all engines and takes years to find the thread your looking for.

Google is a horrible choice for forum search, specially for a forum like GG. I rarely visit GG forums now that I find it completely useless. Please Fix this GG. Forums MUST have local searches, like the old search.

Why was a perfectly working forum search replaced with google in the first place?

Completely disagree. The current search needs tweaking, true, but Google is the best option for search engine (just to need to write this feels dumb).

Man, I think you missed some things.

@Novack: I'm not debating if google is good or not, obviously it's one of the best, but it doesn't and CANT return results as good as the old custom "engine specific" search did.

Quote from Scott
Quote:The search is on the list of web stuff to improve. The change to the Google search was necessary as the previous search relied upon 3rd party software that we no longer had a license for after the shutdown last year.

I'm pointing out the obvious and don't think I need to explain why google search is having a hard time figuring out what C#/C++ code belongs to what engine, ill let you figure that one out. :-) I also don't need to explain how google crawls or caches pages.

GG uses a shared "viewthread" folder for all forum threads, making it impossible to use site: to specifically use engine specific forum link.

You can use something like site:http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/36, but you get results based on the last crawl and only a few pages deep, typically the thread has been pushed off that page.

Aaron, dont worry, nobody here said that needs your explanaitons either, so save your astonishing wisdom for some old lady in the neighbour ;)

As said, you missed some things. For start, what you call
Quote:a perfectly working forum search
was all but that. Also, the GG's site search has its history, and thats also an important factor for us [some members] to consider using Google, as an step in the right direction.

And, as said, the Google search needs tweaking, but as said (and apparently you understand the same) there is no better choice for searching, than Google.

Site keeps going down, probably too many people overloading the server :)6 times out of 10 it shows up between 7-9am (GMT), other times its either down (times out) or the snap shot appears which is slow as a snail. More powerful server needed, or backups/updates get in the way?

@Julian

Resolving that is at the top of our own wish list for the site. There are some things internally that are a blocker for it right now, but those blockers are close to being removed.

Is there a way to sort posts by date?

Sooooo. I need to be on here more. I'm Matt Wood, the new web dev. Let's get a good conversation going over the next little while about what the most pressing additions to the site are. Loudest wins.

GO!

FYI Server problems should be lessened. I would say very shortly the down times will be non-existant. Let me know if it gets worse.

Hi Matt! Welcome and here my kindly request... :-)

Could we have a printer friendly view of pages?
Sometime I want to print a blog or a resource page for reading it when I'm travelling or to file it...

At the moment I use Chrome as browser with StyleBot extension for auto-hiding the best it can the unwanted parts of the page... but it's more pain that a simple "print me!" button ;-)

If you wanna take this task really really far, my dream would be this...
I click print button... it open up a page where I can set if I want to print only content, content + all comments or content + selected comments (so with a field to specify, comma separated, the ID numbers of the comments I wanna print). Click "Done" and it open up the page CSS formatted for the print...

The last option (content + selected comments)is for when you have a thread where comments contains needed clarifications or corrections/update to code contained in the original thread content...

Also... in the resource posting page you have to select a category (product) to which the resource relate to...

Yesterday I would post as a resource a link to my custom css for GG site print in the StyleBot gallery but could not relate it to any product...
What about a category "general" for resource not related to any particular product?

The http://www.garagegames.com/community (link aka "Whats New") displays the Employees blogs only, and for having a list of all Blogs, you have to hit "Blogs".

This prevents us from having a view of the whole thing on one page. Also is kind of boring to enter the community section and see the same blog headlines for MONTHS.

Remember that the employee blogs have already an special treatment on the root (www.garagegames.com), so no need to hammer our heads in the community section too.

Essentially, what Im asking is that by default, the community section display "all Blogs" instead of "employee blogs".

Bug: when you edit a post, after saving, the site leave you at the post number #1. (imagine the frustration if your post was on page 14).

Codeblocks improvements:

  • Highlighting within code blocks.
  • Adition to the header of codeblocks: View Plain, Print and "?" are the current options. A "Copy" option would be just perfect. I've seen that on some site, in the same gadget used here, that on click, copies the code to the clipboard (without line numbers, etc).

Nothing here (was reporting an odd thing that I can't reproduce).
