Site searching headache

by You Meng Tee · in Site Feedback · 07/28/2010 (6:33 am) · 34 replies

Hi guys,

After the site July update, I found that searching for stuff is a big PITA. For example, search for 'lobby' and we have to swim through pages after pages of not really useful results, even after changing keywords such as 'lobby resource', 'lobby example' or 'lobby tutorial'. Kinda reminds me of Altavista in the late 90s.

Perhaps what is needed is to have some sorting options (noticed results is sorted chronologically), such as most popular, or the one with the most search word occurrence, or anything.

Anybody felt the same way?

I noticed this guy shared the same issue (www.torquepowered.com/community/forums/viewthread/118289)

Torque EULA Discussion This is a thread I KNOW to exist and have had recent activity.

This search function can die and goto hell

The pattern, for those who do not wish to wast time to see what is so wrong with this search function, is none of the words entered into the search actually seem to be used IN the search!

Please can we have one small thing that actually works properly, something that do not require large amounts of time DICKING with it to make it do what it should? Im so weary of TorquePowered pattern of one small step forward, followed by staggering in circles, pronouncing everything will be fine 'very soon', then passing out for a few weeks only to awake and forget all about it...

Im going to keep harping about this like some deranged asshole, because im quite weary of this type of amateur hour crap. Get your TorquePowered shit together! ARGH, what a wast of time! (there now im better, nothing like a good rant to vent the frustrations out...)

I know its only been an hour, but this damm thing is truly slowing my productivity.

Im going to keep squeaking about this until someone shoves my head in a mouse trap, or someone promise a quick resolution to this TorquePowered bullshit.

Using Google to search the site is a hassle, and do not search any of the private forums(rightly so), but this exclusion is much of the information im trying to find. TorquePowered flying monkey butts! (Exercising my forum turrets.)

I can confirm issue. Almost any search I do returns same irrelevant forum topics

Basically it doesn't do search at all, it just returns list of most recent topics

I've found that the more vague your search terms then the more likely you are to get results -- kind of backasswards of any other search function :D

The difficulty is in wading through the irrelevant results... which is quite annoying! Although I usually find what I'm looking for... the time spent, for most people, just isn't worthwhile.

I was able to find SOME of what i was needing yesterday, but the added price of spending so much time looking for information I once had links for(so i knew the search terms that should be working), was driving me completely crazy. Normally I love to do research, but im finding busted functions to be a 'button issue' against my sanity.

I was thinking overnight perhaps the search database was damaged when the website was updated (the only plausible reason I could logic up as i ponder my problems), as I have not needed to search for anything for weeks until yesterday...

I posted about the search problem almost 1 week ago..

It seems the relevance sort was replaced in favor of a date sort without a way to switch back. And all topics with any of the keywords are returned.

I'm surprised more people haven't complained about it, I was starting to think it was just me, is it because far less people are using Torque?!?

I'm pretty sure that TP are aware of the problem as this is actually a topic that pops up from time to time. The site's search has always had issues throughout GG->TP history. I believe that they are taking (have taken) steps to improve things, but much like anything it takes a bit of time.

Website traffic is down considerable over the last year. www.markosweb.com/www/garagegames.com/

I can not find the analysis I usually use(i am on a laptop at a coffee house), and the above one is quite weak on good information, but shows the general trend.

Unless TorquePowered can win Game Engine of The Year for T3D , the slowly downward popularity trend will persist. I suspect TGEA 1.7.1 winning a few years ago only to be found so, ..um.. lacking of many qualities, by many who expected better from a Game Engine of The Year winning producer, is indirectly responsible for this slight downward spiral (one may conclude a number of other factors by evidence from the TorquePowered blogs and forums).

But if TorquePowered can keep up with the likes of this last few months of real noticeable improvements (and sold investment stock) I would be buying it up, and popularity is sure to improve.

Also Fall seems to be the most popular time for webtraffic to pickup on game engine developer websites. So having a good solid/stable line of TorquePowered products "Gold" for fall would be most profitable for them and the community.

And get the site search fixed. Way to much good information is lost without it.

@Christian: You statement is haphazard at best, If your gonna be critical make it good...

Search is useless. The end result of this poor search facility will be numerous repeats of requests for help.

Understandably the documentation is a high priority and has moved leaps and bounds ove r the past few weeks however until that is the bible we all want it to be for T3D we are stuck with searching.....and with that broken we are left with the only alternative......post repeat requests and hope someone bookmarked the solution in the past.....is it that hard to export it all into a PhpBB3 forum ;-)

I find that using Google works adequately. Though it is annoying.

It doesn't appear to search the private forums though (as someone else mentioned) which means we miss the key stuff.

Why does GG keep Torque forums private? I can see no reason to do that! google is unable to index it -> less buzz about torque, newcomers have no idea whats going on with engine (public forums has very low traffic) -> they unlikely will chose T3D as their game platform.

Because that gives us a secure area where we (license holders only) can talk about source code. As it stands only Torque3D, iTorque, and Torque for Wii, and a few of the 3rd party kits even have a private sub-section.

Some forums are private so licensees are free to post source code when seeking solutions to problems. Much information about the many TorquePowered products are available from Product Blogs(what are hard to find with a busted search function) and the public access forums, where I have learned much about the other engines and even posed a few queries of my own.

This is only the forth time(that i recall) in nearing 10 years that the forum search have been busted.

EDIT: and what Quick Draw Michael Hall said...

Maybe that's why I like it so much - I get quite annoyed when the GG search *does* let me see private threads, making my heart leap with hope--only to be dashed when I follow the link and get the big red error message :P.

Thats the worst solution I can imagine, you hide biggest and nicest part of info about your engine because you are afraid of source code leakage? First of all I don't believe that anyone can assemble whole Torque engine from source pieces posted in private forum, second - you can always hide everything inside [code] tag from people who have not bought your product, but all other info will be accessible for everyone including search engines.
