Max Character Export using Bones BUG!

I don't understand why I can't get this to work with bones.
Every time I try to export I get a max crash.
If I delete the MultiRes::bodymesh it will run through the export and not crash but I get no details to export. It has something to do with the multires or the mesh. I followed the documentation and I still plauged with export problems.
I also can't get the bones to function right if I have the scene settings below max's starting default.
Why can't I do things in the default setup where all will work fine?
Why do I have to make the mesh so small that bones are HUGE unless I reduce them to .02 in size? They don't work properly at that size.
Any clues as to a work around?
