Possible future merger of pureLIGHT and Torque

by Dark Tengu · in pureLIGHT · 03/11/2010 (4:52 pm) · 3 replies

I noticed that Unity 3 will now have built in Beast lightmapping support, it would be great if GG and pureLight Tech could work something out. I noticed that pureLight support is available for Unity now, but I can't imagine it will pay off too well now that the Unity market is completely gone. It would be great to see two great product available in one package. I wish pureLight tech the best, David has always seemed like a great guy.

I don't want to talk too much about Unity on the Torque forums, but, there's a few things to mention. Their Beast integration is only for paid Unity Pro users. Also I can't see it being a complete implementation of Beast, which alone costs far more than Unity Pro, so the economics there just don't make sense to be included free of charge. So the market is still very much there, not as large as before, but certainly still there for the free version and the pro version to some extent.

Plus we're competing on overall lighting quality, ease of use, rendering speed, and that you aren't necessarily tied down to a specific engine with our content.

On the Torque side, Torque has far better support for combining dynamic lighting/shadows with static lightmaps than Unity currently does.

Sure the economics add up, no Unity user is going to be able to afford a Beast license on their own. They lose nothing by accepting $500,000 -$1,000,000 or so to include Beast with Unity.

Do people using the free version really have the cash to purchase pureLight though? I think that there is a reason why they are using the free version.

I think it's fair to say that people that use free engines don't expect all their tools to be free. Really, it's a bit of an apples and oranges discussion. You pay for content creation tools because they don't get anything from the final product. On the other hand, if you make money with some of the "free" engines they get a cut of your sales so it's a trade-off. As for the Beast/Unity question I concur with Tom. From what I've heard and seen the version of Beast in Unity is not the full on $10,000+ version. From an economic point of view licensing to 10,000 users for $500,000 might only make sense if your on going support costs are low. We'll see how it pans out, but I think pureLIGHT still has a leg up when it comes to features and workflow. We are definitely on par quality wise.
