Norton SONAR is deleting torqueDemo.exe!
by Daniel Buckmaster · in General Discussion · 01/09/2010 (8:11 am) · 55 replies
So cleverly, Norton has suddenly taken to deciding that torqueDemo.exe is a high-risk program and should be deleted every time I try to run it. Anyone else had to deal with this? Curiously, there are no problems with the debug executable.

You know you can get free AV programs that will give you a false-positive rather than paying for a false-positive ...

I have fixed things like these in the parts by yelling at people who pay for Norton, ranting for up to ten minutes about its weaknesses, then recommending any of the major free ones like Avast :)(I might be available for rant sessions over Skype during weekends ;)

..sign me up for the free rants! ..the lady of the house is on muscle relaxers until the 12th. As you can guess, I don't get yelled at nearly as much as usual. I'd like 11 minutes of Rant please. Thx!

For now I've just turned it off... seems to work nicely :P.

Well... let's pretend, say, that I've, I dunno, paid for a year or so... anyone got any ideas? :):P

In the top menu, click on settings
Click on antivirus
click on "scans and risks" tab
At the bottom, you can add it to "scan exclusions".

Oh, and it's probably too late to note that I would have gone with free AV, had not dad insisted I go with Norton :P.

Thanks Mike - that seems to have done it. I was going through the SONAR settings, but just adding it to auto-protect exclusions works fine. I need to learn how to use this product :P.Oh, and it's probably too late to note that I would have gone with free AV, had not dad insisted I go with Norton :P.

The only thing I know, is when my subscription is up, I'm moving back to AV. (norton brings my computer to it's knees)

I'm seeing the same problem with a soon-to-be-released commercial product. I'd love to know more specifically why SONAR is reacting to Torque this way? I'm using a heavily modified version of TGB.

Some antivirus programs consider that a trojan.

Torque uses a "built in" compiler to compile the cs scripts to .dsoSome antivirus programs consider that a trojan.

been using it for more then 5 years now and up until version 2009 its been sending this false positives.altho just seen it in torque and one time I used ryzom mmo engine.
in my case fps demo gets deleted every single time i run it while connected to internet.
if I disable internet connection it works fine.

Faults or not, Norton is an extremely popular antivirus package, and bound to be installed on many of your customer's computers. If the first reaction they get from downloading your fresh new game is that Norton screams at you IT'S A VIRUS and promptly deletes it, it stands to be both a customer service nightmare (as you have to spend time assuaging people's fears as well as educating them on how to unquaranteen something), as well as a public relations nightmare. "What's this *** you put on my computer?!"
And trying to preemptively assure them through a FAQ or readme (that no one will read) that "It's fine.. really" doesn't seem like a good solution.
Thoughts?

I'm worried about this from a standpoint of negative customer reaction. Is there way to build the executable in such a way that norton sonar *doesn't* think it's a virus and quaranteen it on the first run? Anyone have any luck on this, I'm trying to test some network connectivity so I can't exactly turn off the internet access and no matter how many times I tell it that the file is ok, it will kill the executable on launch

edit: I'm going to virtualise and encrypt the files into a package and see if this fixes the solution temporarily for my build - I will get back to you. But the bigger picture needs to be looked at as it would have an impact on everyones games and not everyone knows how to re-instate a file that Norton has removed.

anyone at GG have a solution for this on the horizon? I can't keep telling people that have Norton that it's ok, do an exclusion or change your anti-virus software. refunds and lost sales galore, not to mention the support! edit: I'm going to virtualise and encrypt the files into a package and see if this fixes the solution temporarily for my build - I will get back to you. His post is spot-on to a post I have thought about making more than a few dozen times.
This .severely. needs attention.

Isn't this just a case of sending the app to Norton and saying "sort your false-positives out" ?

- I think it would be ideal to solve the issue where it lies rather than petition N companies to adjust their DBs in a timely manner.
Actually, let me change that;
I suppose both ideas would be ideal, but I do not think that we should have to do the leg work when this affects all clients of the SDKs, not just the few of us barking about it.
Steve, call the AV companies and get this fixed by March plz. :D + :P

I have come across several AVs, free & pay, that call out Torque SDKs for a ws1 worm(I assume the .DSO compiler).- I think it would be ideal to solve the issue where it lies rather than petition N companies to adjust their DBs in a timely manner.

I doubt that Norton would resolve this from the developers point of view it would have to come from the source (GG) - plus they would probably ask all sorts of questions that we do not have the answers to.
