error after loading game.

I get the error could not find a compatible display device after loading this on my sons computer as a christmas gift. I see by the blogs other people have encountered the same problem. I don't understand all this computer lingo for advice on how to fix the problem. I am a little frustrated that I even have to mess with this. Can anyone tell me in basic laymen terms how to correct this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have a 12 year old anxious to use his christmas present.
