Tutorial request thread

by Eric "Fruitbat" · in Torque 3D Beginner · 12/02/2009 (10:49 am) · 62 replies

Quoted from David Montgomery-Blake, in the Torque Binary Announcement comments.
Quote:Could people wanting tutorial features for genre or game-specific tutorials please post their desires on the Torque 3D forum? It will help keep our eyes on them as Mich and the doc team move forward. It will also help keep people who are interested in writing tutorials or books eyes on what the community wants. It keeps coming up, but rarely does anyone provide any specifics.

So, I figured I'd just go ahead and start a thread for it, since I couldn't find any similar discussion.

I'll go first:
A tutorial on how to do an account system and persistent characters using an external database (Using say, MySQL) would be really great, as the resources regarding this are outdated and insecure, according to the people I've discussed it with.

The purpose of this thread is fairly self-explanatory. Like the quote says, just post what kind of tutorials you'd like.

I would like to see a tutorial on creating a normalmap for an existing DTS object (exporter tutorials are old hat, lots of them already) and applying it in the editor, for those artists That are trying new things working for developers that have upgraded to the new engine :)

but, failing that, a 'cutscene' tutorial would be nice.

screen recording of the creation of recent death ball desert level and the up comming warrior camp level would have been awesome!

What the community needs is good detailed video tutorials.

We can consider unity ,source and udk video tutorials produced by neosis interactive, eat3d, vtc and 3dbuzz as good examples.

Some information about 3D side scrollers would be really useful (camera system/character movements especially), pretty much like the RTS tutorial already available.

Thank you to everyone who has placed feedback and requests for tutorials here. I am very impressed with the amount of efforts and resources that GarageGames has committed to the FPS Tutorial we will release with Torque 3D 1.2. After that release, I will begin creating a master list of future tutorials and your feedback and requests here will have an important weighting on that list!

Been directed to this thread, but if Torque 3D is gonna attract more users, you need to start focusing on the other game genres. Take the RTS mini-tutorial for example, go ahead and make it complete for a simple RTS demo, similar to the approach you have taken with the FPS tutorial.

Someone has mentioned a RPG tutorial, you could work on that too..

This would showcase the capability of the engine and its versatility.

Physics is probably top of my list. Forces, joints, the lot. A forklift truck or similar vehicle would be great in that theme.

I've always thought a sport game would make a good learning experience. Very simple to understand in terms of goals, triggers and so on.

Not nesseceraly a tutorial, but a RPG template.
can have a empty mission but have the player set up for the single player melee, cast, and range attacks, maybe one inv slot like a bag you can click on the hot key and open, and one hot key for each attack.

Its easy to look at the gui and see a hot key for a attack and duplicate it, same for a inv slot, writing the code from scratch and creating the gui for it is not that easy for myself, and im sure for alot of others.im more into level desgin and editing.

Adding triggered events is not to hard to do.

I have searched for single player RPG's for the last few years and there are alot more people than you would think searching for them, and theres only like 3 maybe 4 that are any good, and even all of those but 1 maybe 2 are rpg shooters, modern warefare with quest givers.

I think a good old fashion RPG made with modern tools would go along ways.

I agree with Thomas. While I'm currently playing with the FPS tutorial, I've often wanted to play around with an RPG style game, but trying to get some sort of melee system working seemed daunting at the time. Even something as simple as an RPG template, with the ability to switch between melee weapons and (well anything, really, bow's, casting, whatever) would go along way to help those (like me) who are newer to Torque.

Thanks for the feedback guys - awesome!

@Thomas - you said that there are 3 or 4 that "are any good" could you provide me links or examples that I can look at to get a visual idea of what your looking for?

I like the idea of doing both some tutorials as well as some "templates" to provide a starting/jumping off point.

+1 for creating a rpg or rts tutorial in the style of the fps tut. or a sidescroller. A GUI Tutorial. A single player tutorial. Mainly anthing not fps related to show off how versatile T3D is.

Tutorial request.

I'd like to see GG offer art packs like the decals pack, and have a tutorial that goes with them/makes good use of them. Blood splatters as seen in the zombie video is one that I would love to see - can't have a zombie game without them can you!?

Coders who don't have art, and artist who can't code could both make use of this approach (lol as could lazy artists/coders)

Pweeeese.

@ Geoff

Here are a few links of what you get when you search for a single player rpg.
You can see on one page alot of them are for the wii.
not alot out there for the pc.

Single player that are worth playing are

fallout 3
fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/home/home.php?country=us
However fallout3 and all fall out is based on the future and not a fantasy rpg.
The Fps in T3d can made into a fallout style rpg with few modifications.

Im more intrested in the fantasy rpg, And will be getting AFX to go with T3d1.2
This style of rpg requires more than just switching a weapon. need to have mmo style player controls. to select the target to attack.not just point a gun and shoot.

Im hoping the AFX dload has a template with this style player set up allready. as far as inv and hot keys a small example goes along ways in studying it and replicating it.

Maybe the new oblivion the skyrim

www.elderscrolls.com/skyrim
I think the Skyrim game will be like the rest, people get it and in a month it fades away. To many cheats and hacks for the games they make.

The only other one i can think of off hand is darkmessiah.
This is the perfect style single player fantsy rpg.

darkmessiahgame.uk.ubi.com

This next link is talking about the future the Rpg genre

www.1up.com/features/future-single-player-rpgs

Most basic of what im looking for ,is a scaled down World of warcraft, same player control and same freedom to roam around, but still have it quest based and quest driven.but not the same maps or cartoonish style of wow.

Single player fantasy rpg's are all becoming console games, the competition for a pc version is minimal at best.

The genre for pc fantasy rpg has all gone to large mmorpg's,and allmost all of them have become free to play with a shop or store to buy items and upgrades.

This is a sign of a failing market for mmorpg's as for now they are a dime a dozen.

Edited 11/22/11

Anyone wanting to make a RPG, I highly recomend you buy ArcaneFX for T3d
It is catered just for the RPG and comes fully loaded out of the box with all player controls set up for a single player Rpg.
A huge selection spells and hotkeys added to study and replicate.

And has full documentation on how to use the procuct.
Thanx Faust Logic for a job well done.

I must say that my true love in games is RPG so its a must i wanna create one, FPS are the games i dislike the most the only one i played till i beat was HALO what an awesome game however it still have'nt replaced RPG's or Action games, nor Sports for that matter, while it seems that FPS are the easier to get into (create), it seems like you guys force your customers down that path, i like the action kit its great, i believe one of the reasons that the PS1 did so well was the multitude of RPGs for the system, i mean most people bought their n64's to play zelda (atleast i did), while not quite the RPG i'm talking about it still shows my point i believe, most of us would like to make the next FF7 in our own way and i feel quite sure that Torque3d can handle the job for most of us if we just knew how, why isn't there an RPG kit or a lot more tutorials **** oh my laptop about to cut off i'll continue this post another time** thanks for listening you guys at GG are the best love what you're doing and thaank for giving mea shoot at making my dreams come through

Hello all,

The idea of doing a tutorial request thread is great; however, I think if there are not people willing to implement them for free or offering solutions for a specific price (why not?), this thread becomes completely useless because there won't be any solution to whatever request placed here.

It would be more or less like a person who is waiting for another person who does won't appear ever. That would be insane!

Moreover, all the tutorial solutions should be complete and with practical application using the game engine with a beginning, middle and end, step by step, and not partial solutions, because these forums are already full of them and half or incomplete solutions does not help anyone in especially beginners in the Torque 3D game engine.

Moreover, Torque Script programming it's not the easiest of the script programming languages in the world; therefore, the beginners needs a lot of helpful assistance or will end up giving up at all.

Anyway below are some of my suggestions for a tutorial.

Tutorial # 01:

A tutorial related to conditions of victory or defeat and achievement of goals in a game, because without them, the game will continue endlessly until the player gets bored by the lack of action, goals or both and exit the game.

Conditions of victory, defeat, and success or failure in accomplishing a specific goal in under a fixed time or time free is mandatory in any game, whether a FPS genre, sports, RPG, or whatsoever genre being a single player or multi player type.

1.1 For instance, if the player gets a shot and dies the game is over (defeat condition);

1.2 All enemies are eliminated during the game play (using UAISK bots, for example, and the game will be ended (victory condition or objective achieved);

1.3 The player arrives to a certain point in the game level, picks a particular object or place something in somewhere or both, a timer bomb or surveillance equipment and picks a DVD thing ( after completed objective condition the game can finishes or brings up a new goal to be achieved).

Tutorial # 02:

A tutorial on how to make a Sniper Scope View HUD Effect, the kind where the player by pressing a keyboard key or mouse button the player can look through the rifle scope lens of the gun with one or more zoom levels depending on the player's gun type and shoot at the enemy. For example, the stock lurker rifle has a scope, but it is totally unworkable because the player cannot be aiming anything through it.

My proposal is if you know how to and are interested and qualified of make a solution to ALL my tutorial requests in this post and know how to make them step by step in detail with a beginning, middle and end, presenting it a practical application in Torque 3D MIT, but you do not want to make it for free. It's fair!

No problem, show your solution in action in a video using the Torque 3D MIT. However, of course, you do not need to show the programming code in the video yet, just the solution in action and your contact email, because if your solution is what I am looking for and the price you are requesting for it is fair, and I might buy your tutorial.

Greetings,
