Graveyard of dead projects
by DME · in General Discussion · 05/08/2003 (3:19 pm) · 256 replies
I was wondering what happens to people once they do a bunch of work for a project and then it dies.. Do the people just take their work and go to another project?
Reason I ask is because I'm currently working on level design using worldcraft. It has come to my attention that there has to be billions of levels already out there that no one ever uses.
If I take a completed level add my own textures and change it to suit my game is that copy write infrigment. Cause I started with a level then edited it?
If it is does anyone have levels kickin around that they are not using?

BSD/MIT type licensing would be appropriate, since most projects here are commercial in nature.

GPL licensing would quite efficiently kill any usefulness of this idea. Additionally, GPL is not compatible with the torque license, so it would be illegal to release any code that links to any TGE code.BSD/MIT type licensing would be appropriate, since most projects here are commercial in nature.

USE OPL...

C'MON people weve been through this several times. There already is a license for OpenContent. Actually there are about 10 different licenses to choose from. www.opencontent.orgUSE OPL...

:)
Good luck on that, it's a really cool idea.

Duh! I was interesting in helping you with some cool stuff (making logo, furnishing tons of models) . But if Tim Smith is coming on that I'm no more interested.:)

@Matthew Fairfax: How goes the 'thinking' about a website for this idea? I'm asking because I'm considering offering help on the website provider/hosting/bandwidth side. I don't know what your situation/status is, so I don't know what you may like as far as assistance.Email me: carpdon+earthlink.net (change + to @)

I'm pretty set with hosting (that 44 Mb/s connection I have offered various projects at times) though, if this takes off, I will have to pop for an extra hard drive for the server (how long do you think an 80 Gb would last). I was actually already thinking of putting in a new hard drive soon anyway so this is no big deal. Thanks for the offer though =)
@Djaggernaut
I really respect your work and would love to have you onboard =)
@Everyone
I really like the domain digitalboneyard.com (I've always preferred .com's just b/c everyone assumes it first). I'm not going to buy the domain just yet (I just wanted something to call it) so if anyone cooks up a name everyone likes better then we can still go with that.
I need to get a little further in the quake3->dif stuff I am working on so that I can put it into some people's hands and then I will hammer out a website for this. My goal is to have something up and running by this weekend.
If any artist wants to work on the design email me an 800X600 mockup in a common graphics file (jpg, bmp, tga, png, gif) or in a Photoshop psd and I will translate that into a website. My talents lie in making the website easy and intuitive to use not in making it pretty =)

Heheh... I just had a good idea. We should ask someone for some old work they did on a website before, then just change the name... ;)
05/18/2003 (7:13 am)
I think digitalboneyard.com is the best name, and think you should go ahead with that when you get a chance... If I could use photoshop or any type of art program, I'd be glad to help, but unfortunately I'm no artist. :(Heheh... I just had a good idea. (well it won't be 99% vs 1%, but you know what i mean)
05/18/2003 (7:19 am)
Better put some sort of resource rating system in there too, otherwise you'll have to sift trough 99% crap to find the 1% good stuff tough :)(well it won't be 99% vs 1%, but you know what i mean)

You might consider implementing a trust metric, too...

whilst your at it, a mirror for all GG / Torque related member tutorials would be great, alot of (i think) great tutorials in the various sections have been seemingly lost and vanished of the net as hosts come and go.

We should look for a license.
We can even create some sort of commercial arrangement. Digital Boneyard only making ppl encounter.
I thought about a private section with more ressources for ppl who GIVE ressources.
I've made some research for a logo.
I find the cross and the tombstone really interesting to use, even if it looks a bit morbid, we finally in a "zombie" theme, a dead game ressurect.
I can't upload cause I don't know how to do this with a Mac, but if someone send me a mail, it could be ok ;)

Hey, don't let this post die as the projects we're speaking about. I'm sure 50% of the actual active developpers here had been involved in a project that is dead now. Perhaps it could be a way to make this work useful.We should look for a license.
