Long Running Whinge = Console + Tidle + Non US Keyboard
by Steve Acaster · in Torque 3D Professional · 11/05/2009 (5:13 pm) · 16 replies
I know this has been this way since the inception of beta1, but any chance of a "tilde" fix for non-US keyboards?
Like it used too work in the glory days of TGE - where the button below Esc always brought the console up regardless of where you where in the world?
On a UK keyboard the console comes up via '@ - which isn't even the ~ key anyway. Which obviously makes messing around with console commands a bit of a pain when @ closes the console rather than typing it into it.

Shift-backspace is special enough to not be hit accidentally, and probably not a global key, for example.

Tilde needs alt/cmd here, and the upper left key isn't even anywhere near the same functionality on Mac and Windows. The defaults should at least have some sort of backup key combination, avoiding ctrl combinations (since OS global commands use that a lot on OS X).Shift-backspace is special enough to not be hit accidentally, and probably not a global key, for example.

Oh I feel your pain Steve, bugs the hell out of me

And more if you add the bug when you have a window opened (like connect screen), you key is echoed back to the console edittextctrl :(

I agree this is annoying. On my keyboard it's a % for the tilde :(And more if you add the bug when you have a window opened (like connect screen), you key is echoed back to the console edittextctrl :(

Maybe the only true solution for everyone is to have a locality lookup / map to a key on that keyboard which is both not used for other purposes by the engine and does not serve an important purpose in general typing in the language / keyboard. Although the console toggle key is exposed as a pref.
Thoughts? Does anyone have experience with how this is dealt with in other engines / games / dev sdks?
Actually I am a little concerned about how this might also be affecting gameplay level keybinds. For example wasd movement on a keyboard with those keys in different locations. Or is wasd standard among all language keyboards at this point?

It seems to me that if we went back to using the key at the location of ` or ~ on US keyboards, it would similarly run the chance of being a key with another important function on some keyboards. Is that a valid concern?Maybe the only true solution for everyone is to have a locality lookup / map to a key on that keyboard which is both not used for other purposes by the engine and does not serve an important purpose in general typing in the language / keyboard. keybind says "tilde", tidlekey ~ isn't the one that gets used, it's the one next to it.
It's just that this didn't happen in TGE/A and that software wasn't localized for my UK keyboard. Also just editing the keybind doesn't move this console function.
*shrugs* so I'm a bit baffled.
As for wasd, that should be fine on any qwerty, but not sure about azerty.
Never actually seen an azerty keyboard.

Or, perhaps the world should adopt Dvorak keyboards.
Or, hell with it! Just get the Speech SDK and go voice. "Console!" and there it is....

Look, just use US keyboards. They're better ;pOr, perhaps the world should adopt Dvorak keyboards.

@James: as far as Im aware of, any latin language keyboard is querty based, so the letter keys have minor changes, mostly to the right of the map, near the enter key.
In my case, the misery is that I not only have the console by default activated by an unintended key, but also I cannot map the original key, behind the ESC, which is reported as backslash, "//" (what is odd, as it is not. I have "º", "ª" and "\" in that key).
Is anyone else getting this? Maybe is because is recognized as an escape character?

Now ... did a Dev tell me this was fixed? Or am I now hallucinating?
... too much info to remember ... too little HD space inside my head ...

every other game in the world know what that key is for
every gamer in the world knows what that key is for
i'm surely looking forward to telling everone outside of the US that they have to reconfigure their keyboard every time they play any T3D game.
just out of beliggerant curiousity why did the keyboard handling get mangled?

Rene posted somewhere that it was on the todolist, but it was probably censored by the 'we dont give a damn about non USA customers' depratment. :pevery other game in the world know what that key is for

Mapping the numpad minus key does not seem to work also (a very old bug).
