Softimage DTS Exporter Video Tutorial Feedback

by Matt Summers · in Artist Corner · 10/25/2009 (4:25 pm) · 4 replies

I am just about finished with the new Dark Industries website which includes the documentation and video tutorials for exporting DTS shapes from Softimage. Eventually this will include docs/videos for the COLLADA tools I am working on as well.

My main question and reason for this post is to ask: What specific things you would like to see covered in the videos?

I have about half a dozen or so videos recorded that cover the basics with regard to working with the exporter and its UI, but I know that lots of people are new to Softimage/ModTool in general and might need help with using various tools and relating them to creating assets for Torque. Please feel free to post your thoughs/questions on this thread.

rigging of a character tutorial would help me. :P on the softimage forum that have a rigging tutorial but its for a clock and it was hard to follow as well.

I haven't stumbled onto your existing videos yet (I'm hunting for them), so I've only used the little HTML tutorial that links to the exporter. From that tutorial, the precise requirements of the exporter (e.g. the required XSI object hierarchy) wasn't clear, especially with regard to naming items and adding numeric suffixes. For instance, the Simple Object Scene Setup example includes a null named "detail2", but no null for "detail1". Is that significant? It'd be helpful to have a more-detailed explanation of how detail numbers (on the nulls and mesh names) propagate to (and are used by) XNA and TorqueX.

A full, end-to-end (Softimage_Modtool-to-TorqueX-to-game_output) demo would be helpful in demonstrating how all the components work together and the requirements each has when communicating between layers. Having that understanding will make troubleshooting easier.

For what it's worth, I'm struggling to just get the TorqueX 3D editor to properly import that sample DTS files included with the beta of the converter (beta 2.5, I believe). It keeps crashing. I'll probably need to work with GarageGames on that issue. It's a 100% repro, so it might be easy to diagnose.

Thanks!
