These exact steps:
Standard polygon square, triangulated

Then export via ActorX .ase file

I believe I fixed this yesterday, though that was with the XSI ASE exporter. If you could send a sample mesh to support@purelighttech.com I can confirm that it works with the Maya ActorX exporter as well.
