Plan for Luke Jones

by Luke Jones · 09/03/2004 (12:38 pm) · 2 comments

The time has come to write a plan, a big hairy plan.

I have both TGE and TSE and am getting to know both quite well, trying new things and just learning, learning and more learning.
All while I try to maintain a life and find a job.

Any job, and its not to be with computers, I've spent a good 6 months sitting on my arse fixing the bloody things, so I'm searching for something more physical and which could be deemed "exercise".
Concrete work, I'll know if I get that job in a few weeks.
It'll be hard, but worth it, I love being outside, and summers-a-coming for us in NZ, plus the workout will be good for me.
Been awhile since I did good old hard manly work, used to do farm work, forestry (which was really, cutting the bloody thing down, lucky its just pines and not native), gardening, being a lackey for engineers and other sorts of workshops(usually involves cleaning and tiding up after the grubby basterds).

I really need a job, it's hard enough trying to save for my house and get my car('s, depending on what I've got sitting on my driveway at any given day) going, let alone getting something done as an indy.
I need the right tools, the people, the time...

The ideal thing would be for me to start my own business (and I'm studying business, aswell as C++ and OGL) and earn a wage that way.
But where do I find the people?
They need to be dedicated, know how use the tools provided, have good direction, intuition and understanding of development of games plus the development cycle.

And I need the money to invest in it, with faith.

And before all that, you need a plan

And heres to a start... Get a job, build up the funds, get life stabilised and secure atleast one alternate job/future, and secure a way out and a way to survive if things don't work, and most of all, gain the knowledge needed to do what you want to do.

Right, time to refill the coffee plunger, have a ciggy, and go and finish my part-time/off-on jobs, which are:
Carpet laying.
Painting.
Mowing peoples lawns. (of which, my own needs to be done, which I'm not doing 'til the missus' brother comes and picks up his dog's shit, wanker, no bloody respect)
Chop donw a tree outside my bedroom window so it can sun in the morn.
Chop and stack firewood for myself and others.
Fix everyones cars. (I should be a mechanic, 'cept no bit of paper to say I know my stuff)
Fix everyones computers. (same)

Too bloody full on, usualy get about 2hrs max infront of the old retina burning screen, lucky if I get to use the comp at all sometimes.

Life as an indy on a learning curve is hard, you really need atleast some form of education in a university (which I tried last year, got in but didnt know until 2 months after it started, by then, too late), and a few good examples of what you can do.

Ok, enough rambling and sidetracking myself, I have work to do....

Hehe, I hear ya. I'm a Kiwi as well, and have made a conscious decision not to get stuck into Torque until after summer. My gf is coming over from America for the summer, and that takes priority (along with Uni).

Being at University is actually a good place to link up with likeminded people. I'm not sure if you know of any goings on in NZ indie wise, but you may wish to check out the NZ IGDA which was set up by some enthusiastic guys in Dunedin. We have a summer school games paper which was run for the first time last year to a huge success.

I suggest at least keeping an eye on the forums, which are semi-active :)

Hey dude, it is good to see another kiwi hangin around isn't it!?
Last time I looked at NZ IGDC, looked quite inactive so I didn't bother trying to keep track of it, but if there's another show/meet on, might see you there.
