Plan for Melv May

Plan for this week is to continue experimenting with the various elements of shaders but honestly, if I sit in 'Tangent-space' any longer I'm gonna go nuts.
Been messing with creating normal maps directly from height maps in hardware for refractive bump mapping. Got some nice results but I need to now look at how to integrate these kind of effects into Torque for the masses.
Want to spend the end of the week going through the scene-graph rendering stuff to get a much better understanding of states, portals etc and how exactly to get any of my new rendering stuff into the pipe.
I've ordered another 6 books from amazon (gotta break that habbit) that hopefully are going to help me with various areas of the Torque generally.
This learning means I'm not getting stuff out that's actually useful to the community but I believe it will be ultimately worth it. Don't like messing with things I don't understand, apart from women that is.

6 books? I'm envious of people who can multitask. =)

In response to your ponder ("Kinda wondering if I should be spending my time tackling some more fundamental problems in Torque?"), have you thought about doing anything to the lighting system? It's very poor in its current state...doesn't allow much in the way of dynamic lighting, night/day, etc. Just a thought...

Melv, you've done a hell of a job so far with your work on the engine...I can't wait to see what the future holds. You make me wish you were part of the Project: Warfare team ;)In response to your ponder ("Kinda wondering if I should be spending my time tackling some more fundamental problems in Torque?"), have you thought about doing anything to the lighting system? Uhm..what is Project Warfare? I hope it's not to much like my game, Modern Warfare...:)

Gordon: Six books should last me about 2 months. I'm hooked on books and the damn things are more expensive than a drug habit.
Jim: Yeah, I've been thinking about almost every part of the engine! It all interests me. I've gotta focus though otherwise I end up spending my evening browsing through code and end up doing nothing. Lighting improvements would certainly be a worthy goal.
JeffT made a post recently where he mentioned the fact that he would like to see more fundamental improvements to Torque that would affect the whole community rather than seeing bells and whistles and I tend to agree. I'm justing keeping my options open.
Good luck with your projects people. :)

Good to see someone else is as crazy about buying books as I am. My wife would be surprised. :) Going to Amazon as I speak... gotta get my fix.

As luck would have it, my girlfriend (soon to be wife) is a bookworm as well. I guess you could say she is my dealer. :)

Friends don't let friends read books! Turn them in, or at least tip off the feds!

Melv, can you say that again? This time try to say it louder, slower, and directly into this non-tape-recorder-shaped watch.Friends don't let friends read books! Turn them in, or at least tip off the feds!

I can quit anytime, honest. All I need is just one more book to tide me over. )
