The End of an Era

I have been a member since June 2007 and I have experienced the highs and lows of being part of this community ... Instant Action ... no more Instant Action ... MIT license ... ahhhh the memories. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end.

In my 7 years of being part of this community I have learnt a lot, about myself, about the game industry and about the Torque products. I am by no means an expert on all things Torque but I have managed to do some fascinating things with the technology and come up with some novel solutions and applications for said technology.

Unfortunately however the time has come to bid you all a fond farewell and for me to part ways with Torque 3D. I am not going to go in to reasons and I definitely don't want to start an engine war, but my development of Re-Spawn has made me hit some barriers that I am just not able to overcome with the Torque 3D engine.

Those same barriers immediately disappeared when I started looking at an alternative to Torque 3D ... Unreal Engine 4. Yes there are some license restrictions with regards to 5% revenue share and a monthly subscription of $19.00 ... but ultimately Unreal Engine 4 is going to be able to do everything I need it to.

Over the last month I have been evaluating the engine and comparing it to Torque 3D ... and I have even gone as far as implemented the Re-Spawn Distributed UI inside the new engine ... and it worked. 8-}

I will continue to lurk on these forums and will always use Torque 3D and Torque 2D for quick prototypes, but it is becoming more apparent that Torque 3D is starting to move more towards the hobbyist game developer. This is no fault of anyone or even the committee and is merely my take on the situation.

Once again ... this is not a flame war or an engine comparison ... the bottom line is Unreal Engine 4 works for me and Torque 3D no longer does.

I wish all of you the best for your future projects and endeavors and I will still be around. I want to thank all of you for being such an amazing community and helping me through the years ... good luck and have fun.

Ah, I just got back and Quinton is leaving! :-( Glad to hear Unreal is working out for you though, good luck with the game!

PS if you wouldn't mind terribly and have a moment, I'd love to know privately what your exact issues are, and I promise not to flame you about them! If you get a chance, chris.calef at gmail. Always trying to wrap my head around the various pluses and minuses.

A game engine is a tool to use to make a game. Not all tools are suited to all jobs - use what works for what you have to do and carry on.

That said - T3D is free... lol

It's always good to evaluate and take the steps needed to be heading for the future instead of bogging down. I did the same half a year ago when Epic offered the new licence (and later Cry Tech as well). It didn't work out well with the UI than; as they only could offer Scaleform at that time. Times change, and Epic doesn't sit still...

Good luck Quinton! Hope to see you reach your goals soon enough!

Best of luck, and well, i also have to say, see you at the 'other' forum...

Still checking this forum at a active rate. Torque is a *great* solution with a dedicated community. With the knowledge from years way back (Tribes, TGE, TGEA up to nowday Torque 2D/3D and a lot of add-ons), UE4 with source code kind of feel familiar... :-)

Best regards
