Launched my Open Source Texture Site

by Duion · 06/26/2014 (7:23 pm) · 12 comments

When I first got to Torque3D, I just wanted to make a simple game, but then realized that there are a lot of skills to learn and that a lot of content is needed, for example the textures.
In search for textures I was annoyed that there is not much stuff out there, you can just use without any license clauses, since I wanted my product to be also open source compatible. I made my first things with base-material I could find on the internet, but then realized that in the long run this is not an option and started to make my own textures, by learning photography and image editing.

I dedicated more time into this, than I planned. Then I decided that I wanted to share my work, in case others will have similar issues. So I searched for a platform for public domain textures and there was none that satisfied my needs.
Some people then told me, "Why don't you make one yourself?", I thought over it and then decided to learn webdesign and build my site that suited my needs, now I am pretty much done and hope it works, so I wanted to tell you that I have this platform now, dedicated to textures, maybe I will share other stuff later also.

The art-content is all licensed public domain, so no restrictions and no costs. Also I tried to reach professional quality, so I offer highest resolution possible.

I just started and more content will follow on my site, but I just wanted to inform you and maybe hear some feedback and suggestions.

My site is: www.duion.com

Cool site, Duion!

Not many textures yet but lots of varied details which you don't often find in free texture repositorys.

It's definitely going in my bookmarks.

One thing stuck out for me however, make of it what you will :

Textures CF_DSC00941.JPG and CF_DSC00940.JPG are taken at an angle; I know it's quite easy to adjust the perspective in most graphics program but as a user, I'd expect the available textures to be on a flat projection plane.

Yes, some are at an angle, since I had to look up and there was no space to climb up or else to shoot it directly, I do this sometimes, since perspective can be adjusted a little with some loss of quality, but quality is enough, so better this than no texture of it.
I will also upload ready to use Torque3D materials later for the people with not the skill to edit the photos good, but first I will sort out my Photo archive.

I have some friendly advice. Take your contact info off your site. Say your details/CV are available on request or use a proxy. Putting your info "out there" like that can bite you in the ass.

The details are necessary for German-law, you cannot legaly run a site without impressum, or do you mean something else?

Before I forget it, the site is not just about my work, it was designed with multiple contributors in mind. So if others also want to release something similar under the same terms, there may be room for cooperation.

The goal was to create a repository of textures which you can freely use without worrying.

Textures/photos from other places in the world would be very helpful to further complete the collection, since the environment changes from place to place.
So if someone thinks he has something to share, just contact me.

I'll send you an e-mail. I have some carpet samples scanned, some clothes, a few snow covered ground. I'll take a look and see what else i got. I also got a bunch of background sounds i use for my movies. I record them with an i-pod. If you are interested.
